Only info I can find is that he moved from Sunderland to Leicester in 1966, only made 6 appearances but scored 5 before moving to Mansfield in 68.

I never saw Sharkey play, but he does still have legendary status in these parts, so he must have been a real good player in his day.

SWEENIE Tom Leicester City, York City (1963-1969) Now lives in Yorkshire owning a carpet fitting business.
I think Svarc was local. Possibly not quite quick enough for the First Division. I may have confused him with Sharkey. Sweenie showed a lot of promise. I think I read that injuries cost him the chance of stardom. Got a vague recollection Sweenie scored two goals on his debut against Tottenham. Matt Gillies's superb team of the 1960s was in need of rebuilding and the players mentioned were all in the mix although Sweenie was picked before the Svarc and Sharkey were contenders.
Thank you Mr RA White. That is the bit I don't quite understand. Sharkey seems to have been a bit special at Sunderland. We signed him in his early 20s and he seems to have gone off the boil. Five goals in six games is pretty impressive. It is, of course, possible Sharkey picked up a bad injury somewhere along the way and faded.
Didn't Tom Sweenie suffer a career ending 'tackle' courtesy of Joe Baker in the Forest away game of 1967?
Vulpes, I have a feeling I read something about a tackle. Treatment was limited in those days and some of the injuries were horrific and brutal. As it says above, Sweenie went on to play for York. I have memories of his being tipped for great things. Sadly for him and the club it did not happen.

Hello Vulpesy. I can't help regarding this. I 'missed the boat' with Tom Sweenie, however, if someone knows where he trades from in Yorkshire I would pay him a visit and ask. What the hell, I used to ply a former City goalkeeper with stuff just to get him to tell me what went on!
