2014 Russian Grand Prix Race Thread

Hi all, I know this is early but need something to take my mind of Jules’ accident. From the news we have heard so far, it appears the surgery went well and he is currently convalescing. I hope he makes a full recovery and is back racing. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope this is not the end of his racing career. Hopefully this incident brings about some change with regards to the use of heavy equipment on race tracks in the future. A simple solution would be to have barriers around the heavy equipment of have cranes with long booms so they do not actually come out but remain behind the barriers to move cars away. Hindsight as they say is always 2020. Get well soon Jules!!

So, let us begin, ladies and gentlepeople’s welcome to the Russian Grand Prix race thread brought to you by many shots of Vodka. Jules’ incident was a sad way to end what was a phenomenal race with overtaking all over the field and some phenomenal moves by Hamilton, Ricciardo, Button and the Finger. Even Maldonado had some decent overtakes.

Now we go to a brand new track designed by Mr Tilke and it does look very impressive with barriers all over the place. Four time world champion the finger who visited the complex in August was very impressed with it and said it is going to be a huge challenge in an F1 car.
Some information culled from www.formula1.com. “The Sochi circuit, located in the Black Sea resort of the same name, is the first purpose-built Formula One facility in Russia and hosts the country's inaugural Grand Prix in October 2014, in the same year that the city also stages the Winter Olympics. “

“The track width varies from 13 metres at its narrowest point to 15 metres at the start-finish line. The circuit, which runs in a clockwise direction, consists of 12 right- and six left-hand corners, and combines both high-speed and technical sections. Formula One cars are expected to reach a maximum speed of 320 km/h on the 650-metre straight between the first and second turns, with an average lap speed of around 215 km/h. “

“The circuit is going to be very fast and technical and offering a number of interesting features," says Tilke of the 55,000-capacity venue. “It is a fantastic facility with a great atmosphere and it will be outstanding as the circuit will run through the Olympic Park. I am very optimistic about the future of the unique racing track in Sochi, and am looking forward to a triumphant start of Formula One racing in Russia."
