Peterborough v Forest - Match Thread

Peterborough (A)

Justice was served on Monday night, albeit to the wrong team. A thumping 4-0 win putting us firmly in the play-off positions, five points ahead of 7th with an almighty GD to boot. We even got a penalty, and an incorrect decision went our away.

On Tuesday night, Fulham, despite all odds, managed to beat Preston and secure a return to the Premier League. Barring a 31 goal swing they will finish as champions…if they can hold on to their nine-point lead over the next four games.

Our next game is pivotal for both ourselves and Peterborough. A forest win could put us four points behind Bournemouth, which according to the supercomputer up in Huddersfield, still wouldn’t allow a possibility of Forest finishing second. It would however, put Huddersfield one point behind, which would guarantee Huddersfield finishing second.

Come on Fulham…keep the dream alive!

A Peterborough win would potentially give them a 4-point deficit on Reading in 21st. It would also allow the chasing pack ground closer to an all-out Forest collapse.

Another must-win game then.

League Form (last 10):

*Form Table: 1st v 13th
*GF 22 GA 4 v GF 14 GA 17
*2.3 PPG v 1.3 PPG

Over the last six:

*Peterborough: W1 D2 L3 Home - GF 7 GA 14
*Forest: W2 D2 L2 Away - GF 8 GA 5

Last time out we were 2-0 winners – Garner and Yates with the goals, with a similar side to the West Brom win:

Samba
Spence Worrall McKenna Colback
Ojeda Yates
Johnson Garner Z.Nagel
Grabban

Nine players (I counted them) featured in both sides: Ojeda and Grabban vs. Figs and Surridge.

In our nine league encounters against Peterborough, we have triumphed eight times. In our seven Championship encounters against them we have scored nine goals. So, based on the power of the nine…I am going for a Forest win to make it nine wins from ten.

Team News:

Cook came on late in a return from injury, but Davis and Grabban joined Lowe on the side-line’s pre-match.

Samba
Worrall Cook McKenna
Spence Garner Yates Colback
Johnson Surridge Z.Nagel

Figs doesn’t deserve to miss out, but Cook is a better defender over the course of a season, so I expect a return to the side. Lowe might make a surprise bench return (being one week behind) Cook and Grabban may return after illness.

Our U18s triumphed 3-2 against Blackburn – Gardner (2) and McDonnell with the goals, coming from 2-1 down to put us 5th in the table. Stoke at home next, before four away games against Liverpool, Everton, and Man U twice – FA Youth Cup Final confirmed for 11th May at 7:30pm local time. U23s – haven’t played yet.

Prediction:

Peterborough needs to win this, we need to win this, this should make this a very open game!

I think this will play into our hands and as such I expect a high-scoring game.

4-2 to Forest.

COYR!!!

Three points and move on. As stated it was a tough watch, quite nervy at times. Grabban came, missed a good chance, scored, offside and went off injured that could be him for the season. The Bournemouth equaliser makes no real difference to us, but could to ‘udders, don’t rule them out of auto’s. We need to up our game after today, just to keep the momentum. By this time next week the picture should be pretty clear, as to what the end of season as to offer. Looking forward to Fulham on Tuesday, but realistically, I think it’s to much of an ask to win there.

'Udders have no chance, they only have two games to go; their GD is half of ours and B'mouths.

5 wins in 6 since international break is a great effort

Hope Grabbs is okay 👍

I know ‘udders is unlikely but if the win their last 2, Cov away and Brizzie at home, it’s certainly not impossible.
Bournemouth still have Swansea and Blackburn away and us and Millwall at home.

In April, we have taken 15 points from 18. Cherries have taken only 9 points. We both have two more games to play in April, which having to play 8 games in a month is ridiculous.

We certainly still have a sniff at auto's....but quite happy being in the playoffs

We will win our last 2 games....no doubt about that...I'm sure the most of you have seen our last couple of games so know we are a decent side

We have just turned too many victories into draws...only a month ago 2-0 up at albion on 80 minutes and end up drawing......sadly we have just run out of games

I think 3 of the 4 play off births are taken, position not fully established yet, but sixth is still up for grabs. I can’t see Bournemouth capitulating enough, unfortunately, for either of us to capitalise, though stranger things have happened. Teams now start to avoid suspensions, and where possible, injuries. The season has been pretty crazy, don’t expect the play offs to be any different. That said, don’t think too many people would have picked ‘udders, Luton and Forest for the play offs, certainly after ten games, so congratulations all round to all of those concerned, and it may still get better, for at least one of them. 👍

Game 42 - April 23rd 2022

Peterburger 0 - 1 Nottm Forest FT

Surridge (45)

That was a bit weird. Peterburger's ground is like something off The Outer Limits - you know it can't be real but the camera angles give it an oddly convincing edge. The game itself was like a pre-season game, full of strange distractions stitched together by careless mistakes. Perhaps it was nerves, perhaps it was tiredness, perhaps a touch of chicken counting, but Forest weren't great.

Or perhaps it was Peterburger's fault, with their lumbering press and their being all "threatening" in that not very threatening way they have. Their early efforts managed to produce blocks from DJ Spence and Samba, but that was all really.

Forest's goal came right at the end of the first half, and was a relief because the game was in danger of wandering off and dying in a ditch, but also because it provided a reminder of just how brilliant Forest could be. Zinks robbing possession, progressive interplay between Johnson and Zinks, a sublime left footed cross from Johnson, and a perfect headed finish from Mr Samuel Surridge. Sweet.

Forest could have scored several in the second half, but Peterburger players kept getting in the way, which was awkward, and Grabban scored an offside goal, missed a sitter, and got himself injured, which was very Grabbanesque. The usual complaint of "we'll rue these missed chances" carried little weight, however, as the game peterburgered away into that ditch we mentioned earlier.

It's important not to draw too many conclusions from these final matches. Each encounter brings its own context and its own problems. Peterburger were always going to put up a spirited fight (unlike, say, Derby), so to inform the world that "Forest will have to play better in the playoffs" seems an unnecessarily daft thing to say, just as daft as saying if they played like they did against Wet Bags they would stroll through the playoffs no problem. Forest seem to have become pretty adept at solving problems as they arise, so there is no great need to over-react to a sub-par winning performance.

So Peterburger fell through the bottom of the dog box, and Forest edged a bit closer to the Muffs. Apparently, before the Muffs equalised, the Fulham fans were reminding them that Forest were on their heels. We'll be snapping at their Achilles if Fulham let us win on Tuesday night. It's only fair.
