The Skyway's dolphins are spec'd at 10knots but crucially for an EMPTY 87,000 DWt ship. Load it up and the spec drops to c.25,000DWt. So, talking bollix.

And just to clarify, Edin (who i seem to trigger but he cant stop following me around. Bit weird!) I was responding to Sherrifs question of whether any bridge could with stand a hit from a ship one-third of the size (typical size when the bridge was built), about +30K ton

I think the Skyway example shows that it is certainly possible.

I would assume that these dolphins, which can withstand the impact at 10kn of a loaded 25k ton ship, means that the bridge itself is not damaged at that speed and weight.

But does it follow that a boat at 30k tons destroys the bridge? The dolphins will perform a function ranging from total protection to dissipating and deflecting actual impact on the bridge structure , as any crash barrier would.

The Key bridge looked to have no such protection so any impact from something way smaller probably would have had the same impact and it was just a matter of time.

Interesting to think what action now happens with all such vulnerable bridges because reports suggest retrospective protection could cost 100s of millions for each one
