Emma lost

yeah i watched it last night.

she had the odd flashes of super tennis, mixed in with total garbage. Huge over hitting, hitting it half way up the net (one attempted volley didn't even reach the net), shanks into the sky and outside the tramlines. The opponent was serving double fault after double fault in the first set but she couldn't take advantage.

Still she's done incredibly well and we'll never forget her incredible performance last year.

Hope she can get someone to help her turn things around again.

Some people on Twitter are saying she is a one hit wonder and overrated etc but she is 19! people should judge her when she's 30. I'm sure she will come back and win many more titles.

To call her over rated is ridiculous. What she did last year is arguably the most incredible sporting achievement of any UK sportsperson in the last 50 years. Nothing will change that, even if she never wins another tennis match.

watching serena. oddest sports contest ive ever seen.

Serena politely letting the umpire know that she's just going for a toilet break and'll be back in a bit.

jesus this other girl is getting every single bit of luck going. im not a serena fan, but that is tough.

I've not been watching much of it so far, midnight is too late for me during the week as I need my sleep

yes that's fair enough. Turned into a late one for me.

The Serena match was incredible. I don't intend to play into stereotypes, but the spectacle can only truthfully be explained in a certain way.

At the one end was this slim, athletic, blonde 20 something in the prime of her career. The world number 2, capable of pulling off stunning winners that would leave the most agile opponent flat footed.

At the other end was - and I don't mean this in an unpleasant or disrespectful way - this comparatively huge blob that looked from a distance like some sort of fancy dress pantomime character that could barely move.

But any time the ball went near the blob, it came back at 150mph straight down the line, as the slim blonde got sweatier and sweatier trying to chase it around.

It was hilarious

It was only slightly ruined by the US network, broadcasting a tribute to Serena by Oprah Winfrey live on court immediately at the end of the match.

Obviously they had this ready for when she lost (as it's her final tournament), had assumed she was going to lose to the world number 2, and nobody had the brains to say hey, we need to cancel the tribute

What should have been a nice moment for her at the right time, became total hugely inappropriate cringe.

Tennis is in a terrible state at the moment.

The WTA has winners of Slams that just disappear pretty much straight after.

Raducanu should not be written off, but she changed her coach straight after the US Open victory. Such arrogance, I don't think that has helped her at all.

As for the men, totally pathetic, Felix, Fritz, and Tsitsipas have already lost early. Zverev is injured and Djokovic is out for obvious reasons.

The WTA is pretty competitive as nowadas you won't be getting the same usual winners, whereas the mens tour it is mainly Djokovic, Nadal and Federer, although Federer hasn't played much Tennis in recent years and will probably retire next year and he is 41.

Having different winners is great if they actually do something after winning the Slam.

For example, what has Sofia Kenin done since her slam victory? She has totally disappeared and most people don't even remember she won a slam.

Apparently looking through Wikipedia Bianca Andreescu has won a grand slam

Who is she? Does anyone know?

The name doesn't ring a bell to be honest.

posted on 1/9/22

yeah she's fairly well known tbh.

posted on 1/9/22

think she won the French. She's well known amongst tennis fans (I know this as I sometimes post on a tennis forum) for being a bit of a one hit wonder (although not as much so as Emma ).

Even Ostapenko who won as a teenager has done very little since her French open win a few years ago.
