Another interesting stat is that only 2 world champions have only reached the final once - Robertson and Bingham. Expect Bingham to break that record this year, but who knows about Robbo.

So I guess Robbo will meet Luca in a final in the future................

I think Joe Johnson only won matches at the Crucible in the 2 years he won it & reached the final in 86 & 87

I was very frustrated yesterday so didn't end up posting hence my meltdown. I still am very annoyed but I can't really be silent for the rest of the tournament especially as we are at the semi final stage. Fair play to the people on here that handle defeats a lot better then me.

I think he won a first rounder the following year, but yeah, before '86 and after '88 he didn't win again - absolutely crazy record.
But I guess if you're going to win a ranking title, might as well make it the biggest

Joe Johnson is the great anomaly of 80s snooker
86 World champ beat Davies
87 WC runner up to Davies

Never did fack all before or after

amazing he won a world champ and Jimmy never did

After Parrott’s World and UK double in 1991, I don’t remember him playing at all well in the UK. Up until that point, he was very good.

I’m pretty sure he never even reached a World semi after 1991 and don’t remember him doing anything in the Masters or UK after 1992.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
think Parrott was a top player only for a few years really

i actually met Parrott in the early-mid 80s before he became famous
he used to play golf alot at Bowring Park golf course in Liverpool & went to the nearby Derby Lodge hotel afterwards with his uncle. I believe John lived nearby in those days.

My Dad worked at that hotel and I remember meeting a v young John Parrott there a few times

When Parrott joined Question of Sport and starting coming to the bbc studio all the time, I don't think it helped him at all.

I met Parrott at the Wembley Conference Centre as a kid in the year he beat Jimmy in a great match (I think quarter finals). He seemed like a top bloke to be fair. No arrogance, down to Earth, good guy.

Lol, the only other thing I remember him doing was knocking Jimmy out of the Masters one year. I really hated him on that day.

That's funny, I met John when he must have been in his early 20s - he lived opposite my cousins in Liverpool, and he came across as a decent bloke.

He had a really strong spell for about 3-4 years, and then after that was still a regular top 10 player for a few years, and obviously played during a strong era.

Semi finalists:

Maguire
Trump
Higgins
O’Sullivan

Oh dear, this is what we all thought, didn't we?

I thought Kyren had a massive chance against John, but thought last year's annihinlation may play in his head.

I was more definite about Maguire and Trump, thought Wilson will beat Higgins and obv Ronnie, although I felt Bingham was more likely to do the shock upset against Ronnie than Trump and Maguire not making it.

But it just shows you that nothing is a gimme and whilst you wouldn't want it to happen every year, it's refreshing to have some big shocks

apparently the first time since 1977 that the semis have featured 3 unseeded players

I can't stand Murphy, but would you have him instead of Robbo in terms of overall record?

Maybe Dott over Matthew Stevens?

If you want to give a nod to Reanne Evans, 1985?

1990 - Cao Yupeng?

1996 Alexander Ursenbacher

1998 Zhou Yelong

Bingham Wilson final could be decent.

Firstly, great options for 1990, 1996 and 1998, I will add them.

Yes Murphy vs Robbo is hard, both have a World Title, Murphy has reached 3 other finals, but Robbo has been world number 1. Both have won the Triple Crown. Robbo also has comfortably more ranking events. I will have to give it to Robbo, but Murphy is a good shout

1977 is even closer. I mean Dott won the Worlds and Stevens won the Masters and the UK, both won big matches at the Crucible. Both didn't have many ranking even wins even though it was a very tough era.

I just feel Matthew Stevens was more consistent for a longer period of time. Although I feel Dott was mentally tougher than Stevens. For me, Stevens shades it, but this one is really close.

Are you just ignoring Reanne................

posted 2 weeks, 1 day ago

Lol, to be fair, if Reanne was born in 1984, I would give it to her as there are no options, but Gary Wilson has really been playing well recently.
