Defences are better against forward but team defending as a whole has dropped down a level. That's why forwards are scoring fewer goals but teams are scoring more.

Quite simple, teams are spreading the goals around a lot more where’s they’re only using the same keeper to stop conceding them

I am talking about teams overall, not individual players.
There is no denying that overall in the PL this season there have been far fewer goals scored than there have goals conceded.
Are teams just too afraid to attack because they know how difficult it is to score in the PL?

How does it compare against most goals in an English top flight season?

35th highest ever in terms of total goals per game. It would be interesting to see the breakdown of scored vs conceded for those other years higher though. Even weaker defences back in the day.
