A glimpse into the future..........

Listening to Grayson on TV last night, I suddenly had an horrid feeling that he isn't the man to lead the Terriers to glory. He didn't inspire me or reveal any little chinks of wisdom, determination or even a hint of anger about Town's implosion under his reign.

I know it's TV and it's edited and all that, but was anybody who saw that 'inspired' or 'lifted' or indeed left with an impression that our destiny is in good hands ?

Assuming we do indeed make the play-offs, the team is in such chaos I can't see any prospect of us advancing beyond the semi's. We have a team full of talent, players with bags of experience especially of the play offs, but none of it is coming to the surface. Worse though is that we have a team which looks like total strangers, despite the fact many of them have played together for some years now.

What on earth has happened ?

If we are indeed to have another season in Div 3, a major clearout and another influx of new players is on the cards. Grayson will rebuild and we'll have to allow time for his team to 'settle' and 'get to know each other'.

Then you look at who we are up against next season..Portsmouth and Coventry will be tough, then Swindon and maybe Crawley will also expect to do well. Also, we'll probably have MKDons, Notts Co, Stevenage, Preston and maybe Brentford who would expect to be in competition for promotion.

It isn't going to be any easier is it ?

We will have cashed in on Rhodes, our star player, in the same way we cashed in on Pilks and Pelts. There is the salary cap so the opportunity Deano had to buy in big has now been lost. The advantage we had with deano's millions has been squandered..

The trouble with a major rebuild, is it takes time to acheive results and we could find ourselves set for 2 or more years in Div 3 ..

Our chance to go up was last season at Old trafford, once that was blown in the manner it was, the team should have been dismantled then. There is too much evidence of teams that fail like that eventually collapse, indeed Preston themselves are a classic example.

It's a big step back for Town fans, the euphoria of Deano's intial surge has gone, the money advantage lost and the total unknown with a host of new players due in with new tactics under an unknown manager.

We may just have to lower our sights and get used to the idea that we're destined to remain in Div 3 for a few more years yet.

Like me, you'll be choking on this, and you'll be angry like me too, but the sooner we face up to the reality, the sooner we can let go of our anger and lower our ambitions.

The final nail in the coffin would be Deano selling up, that would probably condemn us lower league football for another generation.

Maybe if the Town players realise what lies in store if we do indeed fail in the play-offs, maybe, just maybe they will find a bit more commitment to the cause.....here's hoping.
