What he actually said??
Saying Catholics shouldn't play for N.Ireland, N.Ireland doesn't have enough Catholics in its squad and he can't see why Catholics would want to play for N.I is the height of bigotry and this will stay with McClean for a long time......................
A comparison can be made to the boxer Alan Minter who said he "would never lose to a black man" shortly before Marvellous Marvin Hagler filled him in!!
Even to this day Minter is accused of being a racist, I think young James will have to live with his comments for a long time........................
Is McClean Clever Enough To Realise??

If a wee proddie boy said there are not enough prods at Celtic, and among the tricolour wavin bhoys,I wonder how the McClean fan club here would respond?
Or Ulster rugby players turning out for Ireland, bringing up the religion and identity of team mates and fans,
Think about it.

One would presume that any right thinking person would understand it? I'm not a fan of either of Scotland's 'Old Firm' teams but I think I'm right in remembering Kyle Lafferty was a target for both and the fact that he ended up signing for Rangers wasn't particularly surprising given that, and I'm prepared to go out on a limb here, he was more likely to comfortable in that environment?

Bluebells, you seem obsessed with the Irish rugby team to the extent that I can only presume you want a separate NI team?
Let's take it from the top, the players of the 9 county Ulster rugby team are under no obligation to turn out for the 32 county all Ireland team, if any of them are unhappy playing for that team due to religious or political reasons or indeed any other reason then they have the right to refuse a call up. Now, you call feel free to fall in with forbaik and take McClean's words literally (and personally I wouldn't be the slightest bit shocked to find the bloke hasn't attended Mass in a serious way in years, though of course I might be wrong and he may be as 'religious' as they come) but lets face it, when taken in context and in the whole what he said points to the experiences of an Irish Nationalist turning out for what is essentially a Unionist team.
What's important to get clear here that McClean, like most people in the north who support Irish unification, is not calling for the abandonment of the NI team, he isn't demanding a change in the make of the NI support and hasn't even said that you are not entitled to your flags and songs, he's just said 'it's not for me'.

Why is it they think a handful of knuckledraggers are representative of the NI support?

Why bother Pogued?
I'm finished with them.
We have been telling them for years what the craic is (and a player who switched has just spelt it out to them). Never listened and it's starting to hit home proper and they still haven't a clue.
It's over, let them wallow

CP you being a good Belfast born and reared UK citizen know what McClean said..................
The kid is a bigot who wants to play in a Catholic only team lol................
He is the type who if he lived in Alabama in the 50's would want to play for a whites only team lol.............
Get over it dude............

If you can prove there are no non-Catholics in the Sunderland squad then I'll never post on here again.
Better still, if you can prove that saying 'even in the squads I felt like a bit of an outsider. There weren't too many Catholics, it just didn't feel right' is the same as saying he wants to play in a 'Catholic only team' I will give the ladies of Belfast a thrill by stripping during the Ulster match at the City Hall on Saturday!

Then you sectarian bigots are welcome to one another.
NI will continue to select players of all religions and none.
