Literally every media output from the local rags to the embarassing BBC old boys club and the soon to follow sky sports club label Rooney as Englands Messiah, Greatest Ever, he must play or we're doomed, Rooney the revelation, thank god Rooney is back and he must start has been shoved down our throats for years.
Did Rooney ask for any of this praise. Did he deserve it on an International Level. NO.
However everyone hates on the guy when yet again he fails to do anything. It's the whole team that aren't good enough. Rooney is a great club player, anyone can see that. Is he World Class at club level? Nowhere near I'm afraid, he's just a great player at his best.
He works hard at International level but because we play so deep he can't influence or take control of any game. His header was impossible to miss and that took 8 years to go in. The whole team can't go 1 yard without hoofing the ball it's not just Rooney.
Young was utterly abysmal and to be honest if you take away welbecks and Carrolls goals, they looked woefully average. The whole team just looks like it came from the dark ages.
Rooney is just trying his best in a team that can't play to his strengths
Blame the media for drooling over Rooney

Why is there a need to play the blame game anyway?
We are a 1/4 final team and made it to the 1/4 finals... If we'd have fluked the penalties, it would be a huge travesty.
For whatever reasons... Players like Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard have not fully stepped up to the international game like they have for their clubs.... But Rooney has time on his side and has to be included in the future squad... He may well work better with the next generation of players, manager and tactics.

Missing the point. The team was no more dangerous with rooney than without him. In some cases we looked better.

Before the tournament, so low were expectations people were saying just getting out of the group would be an achievement.
As soon as we qualify as group winners, the team are meant to magically transform into world beaters,
Then when we inevitably lose on penalties, everyone lays into the squad telling them how $h1t they are.
Truth is most England players from Rooney to Gerrard to Lampard (and definitely not Milner) have rarely performed for England and collectively; we're just not very good.
