What we can now expect from England

With Roy looking to stick with some of the old guard, and use his preferred 442 formation, this is what I would expect the team will look like in the next two years:

Hart
Walker Smalling/Cahill Terry Cole
Ox Gerrard Wilshire Young
Rooney Welbeck

Obviously you still need experience in the team, so I can understand his reasoning for keeping a few of the old guard. Terry and Cole look like they can still do a job. However, it may be better to give time to Smalling and Jones, who could be the future CB pairing. Cahill is still reasonably young, and I can definitely see Roy sticking with the Chelsea boys. Cole may not be good enough come Brazil 2014, but the only likely replacements are Gibbs and Bertrand. Both will need to be playing regularly by then to have a chance.

Ox looks like he can be a star for England, and could be a given a chance on either wing, although Young can still do a job even after his poor Euros, and isn't too old. Walcott, I don't think, will ever be good enough to start, and lacks the ball control and ability of the Ox. Other options include Lennon, Johnson and Milner. So not great future prospects on the wing.

In the middle, unfortunately, it looks as though Gerrard will remain captain. I think he had an ok tournament with some great assists, but I don't think he will be able to compete at the highest level in the next two years. But, we can't do anything about it, and so will remain there, providing experience at least. The other midfield slot could be left to a number of promising talents, and it's disappointing Roy loves the 442 and Gerrard so much, as we may not be able to see these talents play. Wilshire looks the best bet to be starting as the other central midfielder. He already performs well for Arsenal and can improve. Cleverley looks exciting, and could be good alongside Wilshire. However, I don't think Cleverley is good enough defensively to play alongside Gerrard. Henderson and Rodwell still have time to improve and have the potential to be great players.

Up front it will surely be Rooney and Welbeck; the Man Utd. pairing. Carroll, if he keeps up his end of season form, will improve and provide another option. Sturridge is the only option, making up a poor selection of forwards.

I think this team is more realistic than the teams suggested by other people, as they think by 2014 we will have a team just full of kids,so no Terry, Cole, Gerrard or Rooney. That's a recipe for disaster as you need guidance and experience, and is unrealistic as Roy would never play like that.

Do people agree with my selections, and are there any other future prospects out there for England?

So Royball worked by default, not by design.

Any port in a storm.

Royball clearly didn't work as we went out at the quarters like we usually do.

First things first we need to sift out the deadwood. Players that should either be retired or play a bit part in England are Gerrard, Lampard, Ferdinand, Terry, Barry, Cole, Parker, Crouch. Rooney needs to be made droppable based on shat performances. Players who are in form and show a smidgen of ability on the ball need to be promoted to the first team.

This would be my team:

----------------------------------Hart

Walker/Richards/Johnson---Cahill-----Lescott------Baines

-------------------Rodwell----Huddlestone/Cleverley------------
Johnson-----------------------------------------------------------Ox
--------------------------------Wilshere-----------------------------------
--------------------------Welbeck/Rooney---------------------------

It makes me laugh how the fans of Spurs, Chelsea, Man Utd have a go at Gerrard.
If he was their club player they would be backing him to the hilt.

Like it Spurtle, I'd go a bit further:

----------------------------------Hart

Walker---Richards-----Caulker------Bertrand/Gibbs

-------------------Rodwell----Cleverley------------
Johnson-----------------------------------------------------------Ox
--------------------------------Wilshere-----------------------------------
--------------------------Welbeck/Carroll---

Parker is simply not good enough for international level. Throwing your body in the way and getting a couple of blocks in is not what we should be looking for

With Parker every second touch is a tackle!

As for the future the FA have invested in Roy for 4 years having just opened St George's Park. Does this mean every age group playing a sterile containing 442 formation. The comments from Roy about possession should be a massive alarm bell.

The FA should have a plan for the future not having a figurehead who hasn't moved on from 442 for 30 years.

Ray Lewington.....England coach, oh dear.

Been outnumbered in midfield and been completely tactically inept & not changing something clearly not working was criminal on behalf of the manager

This bizarre notion seemingly accepted that Roy hasn't had enough time to out across his 'ideas' was a pathetic excuse. Most of this team have been playing together for years.....years! And they couldn't pass the ball to each other. They played better football under McClaren!

A complete joke....absolute shambles with ridiculous excuses as to why top level players played like strangers. The 30 year out of date tactics killed us. a player like Gerrard been given no platform to perform as an attacker due to having to cover Parker's ineptitude and lack of positional sense.

The players don't play this system at their clubs....making the most sensible use of the time given would not have been changing the system but honing a team in a system the players were familiar with.

In fact we've gone backwards. Again!

Calm down fella!

As you clearly know Parker's performance is not the problem, it's the symptom. He's good enough for a top 4 premier league side, and during last season both United and Arsenal fans admitted they'd have liked to have signed him.

The difference is that Spurs, Arsenal and United all like to play attacking football while retaining possession. Parker's job is quite clear - to break up the opposition play and give the ball to the playmaker. Makelele made a career out of doing exactly that.

Aside from that I agree with you - Hodgson is in the process of taking English football back 20 years.

Hodgson cut his cloth from the material available.

If you look closely, you may spot that all the key players at the top-4 clubs who are key to them playing "attacking football while retaining possession" are not eligible for England.

Back to the OP... why no Lescott in your team? He's younger than Terry, doesn't have Terry's off-field baggage, and must be the only member of the England squad to enhance his international reputation during the tourney.

Hart
Walker Smalling/Cahill Terry Cole
Ox Gerrard Wilshire Young
Rooney Welbeck

-----

That would be something....

Sadly Roy's 1st choice for the Euros was as follows....

Hart
Johnson, Carrick, Terry, Cole
Barry, Lampard, Gerrard, Milner
Rooney and Welbeck

He will revert to this XI when they are fit.

A BIG downhill ride for England.
