Are Spurs a big club?

Despite being one of the biggest spenders in premiership history (412 million according to http://www.transferleague.co.uk/league-tables/1992-to-2011.html) they have had relatively little success. Last season harry redknapp had a pop at some spurs fans who moaned about finishing 5th redknapp responded "well this is as good as it gets. If they don't like it go and support someone else" Are Spurs a big club or is it just their perception that they are a big club? Please discuss

Reasoned debate isn't your strong point is it?

It is. You've won 2 first division titles, ten years apart. You've won an impressive 8 FA cups and 2 Eufa cups. However, the true yardstick is, and always will be, league titles.
In that sense these clubs are bigger than you:
Manchester United
Liverpool
Arsenal
Everton
Aston Villa
Sunderland
Chelsea
Newcastle United
Sheffield Wednesday
Leeds United
Wolverhampton Wanderers
Huddersfield Town
Manchester City
Blackburn Rovers

Sorry, but that's the cold hard truth of it.

I'd say Spurs need to win the League again before they can be considered a big club. But they do have a decent team, a decent stadium and a decent fanbase, so they're hardly small.

I agree they're not small. But they always bang on about how they were successful in the 60's, so I decided to put their solitary league title (from that era) into perspective.

League titles aren't the only yardstick

They're one of the most important, but European trophies are also important, and just history in general isn't the only thing you should consider, you should also be thinking about fanbase, infrastructure, financial power, current strength of team.

If it was just about history then Liverpool would still be bigger than United, which is not the case.

You forgot the Cup Winners Cup in 1963. We beat Athletico Madrid 5-1 in the final. That was the first British team to win a European trophy that I mentioned in an earlier comment.

I'm out on the beer with a Huddersfield fan tonight he will be pleased to hear that they are bigger than Spurs!!

Liverpool still have more recent success than Spurs.

They are the final yardstick though. I'll be honest, I wouldn't trade the Champions league for winning the Premiership. It's just means that bit more.

Spurs are a medium sized club, who are a lot bigger than most of the clubs I listed. But I was ending their trophies argument.

its a shocking waste of an argument but when we are accused of having no history by idiots who think life began on day one of the Prem League

I know what you mean. By no means do i want this to turn into a club v club slanging match, but i remember an article on the old BBC606 site, whereby a poster (Chelsea fan) going by the name of "Robby202 Double Champions 2009-10", who genuinely didnt know that Spurs had a reasonable (i'm not claiming its brilliant by the way) amount of succes since 1961, where Spurs had actually won:

2 UEFA Cups
5 FA Cups
1 UEFA Cup Winners Cup
(4 charity shields)

As i say, its not brilliant - but this user had no idea of these trophies.

For the record, the article was under link:
