Local fans myth

I saw this on another article and was shocked by what I found;

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/news/articles/rightmove-news/youre-supposed-to-be-at-home

Does this rid us of the 'local fans' myth about Everton FC?

surveying less than 10,000 fans for the whole of the prem is all my ass. Most of this is guess work. They've asked a certain amount of fans, then they times it by how many fans they presume Liverpool or Utd have.

Alas

You obviously don't know how research and surveys are conducted. Rightmove have taken a sample of 450 football fans from each club. This is probably a random sample as criteria, such as age, gender etc are not relevant. Sampling is used so the researcher can generalise the results. Otherwise they would have to ask every fan what their post code is, in this case. This is both impossible, and impracticle.

No they haven't.

It's just a simple 'bit of fun' survey. If you read the small print at the bottom in the link it says:

"Rightmove surveyed more than 9000 football fans in April 2012 and calculated the distance in miles – ‘as the crow flies’ – between each respondent’s home postcode and the home ground of their nominated team. The distances shown are averages of all respondents indicating that they support a given team.

Respondents were asked to identify both their home postcode and the football team that they support – if applicable. The percentages include the proportion of respondents living in an area – as defined by postcode district – that support each club."

This suggests that it was maybe done by paper rather than personal interviews as we all thought.

They are an estate agent and would most likely have asked people buying houses in April 2012 to complete the survey - were it says 'the football team they support, if applicable' suggests that they didn't have researchers out on the street.

It's just a bit of light hearted research done all over the country by Rightmove who have then assessed all the returned surveys and come up with the figures in the link.

Light hearted, yet some are using it as proof.

It is light hearted - look who's doing the survey to see that. But yes in it's own small way it is a lttle bit of proof that goes against the commonly held myth.

Behave, how can a survey of less than 10,000 (average of less than 500 fans a team) hold any water.

Alas - It was a light hearted survey - you seem to be taking it more serioiusly than anybody on here.

A national estate agent surveyed people buying houses in one month all over the country - in the city of Liverpool it showed that there were 41% more Liverpool fans than Everton fans. You could read into it that Liverpool fans buy houses more often than Everton fans ...whatever. But it still doesn't alter the fact that an estate agents survey - that's all, not a government census but an estate agents survey, showed that of a sample of 450(?) people living in Liverpool the majority were Liverpool fans.

Do you live in Liverpool?

I don't,but I was born in Huyton (which is not classed as Liverpool),and still own the house I once lived in.

If it had come out in Everton's favour maybe you would have liked it more
