Was anyone else listening to Clyde 1 phone in last night. Was in the car and a Rangers fan called up stating that he had just left Ibrox and had been speaking to the chairman - Malcolm Murray. The caller - on the face of it a fairly lucid type of guy - was saying that Murray had been out talking to a number of fans at the front of the stadium and had advised them that, in the event of the club being paired with an SPL team in the cup this season at home it was the aim of The Rangers Football club to sell programs to supporters at a price of £14 that allowed them a coupon that would grant access to the stadium at 50p - thus keeping all the money from the game within the club and not to the other team, SPL, SFA or SFL.
The callers point was - is this legal?
Now firstly this is incredible for a club chairman to say this to a group of fans. While I appreciate the guy might be quite happy to play to the gallery this type of comment does nothing to try and mend the current laughable and lamentable state our game is in.
Secondly this was the same guy who said to the media in July:
"Murray said in a statement onhttp://www.rangersfc.co.uk: "On behalf of the new board of directors, I apologise unreservedly to all for the distress, disruption and difficulty inflicted on the football community, caused entirely by the actions of people who failed miserably to act responsibly during their stewardship of Rangers."
Murray said: "All of Scottish football is now having to live with the consequences of that behaviour and every true Rangers fan will consider it a matter of deep regret that events at our club in the past have been the root cause of an extremely difficult time for Scottish football. "
So while he accepts that Rangers are at the crux of this problematic time for our game, he is willing to perpetuate this issue by acting like some petty child and potentially make matters even worse?
What would the Rangers fans do if the game coming up against Motherwell this was the tact taken by the home team? Would you accept that under the normal rule of split gates for cup game your club gets less than £5k for a 10k attendance when this would normally be around £140k?
What if the first game at home in the cup is a game against Celtic and this is employed. There will be mayhem.
I hope that for the sake of everyone this guy - who had no reason to come on and tell any stories for no reason - is wrong and that this was no more than a bit of show for the fans.
