It's not far away now when the powers to be sit down and negotiate a deal for the broadcasting rights to show the NRL season and state of origin series after season 2011.
The NRL are said to be asking for 1 billion dollars for the NRL season and a seperate negotiation for the origin series which can by all rights go to a different channel to those that win the season proper deal.
What channel-9 (current rights holders) want in return for such a large amount is no seperate origin deal and more time for advertising during a game.
They want to hold up the line drop outs so they can slot in a quick advert and each kick-off after a try has been scored as well for an advert. Channel-9 says these extra breaks in play could generate an extra $50,000 per match, they are also requesting a drinks break for the same reason.
I want to watch rugby league not gridiron as such with all the stop - starts that 9 have got pencilled in for our game. The NRL are in the drivers seat and I hope when the time comes they tell the channels breaking up our game that flows is non negotible.
Channel-9 also want a say in whom the next 2 teams are that enter the NRL where they want a 2nd Brisbane team and a team from Western Australia because of the time zone being 2 hours apart from our eastern states will suit live coverage without any delays or replay of games.
I personally hope the NRL stand firm and get some of rights back that they sold so cheap last time.....like the scheduling of games.
On saying that, 1 billion big ones is a hell of negotiating power.
Cheers

The new independant commision will be looking after things re; t.v rights I'm led to believe but stand corrected and as for the league having the most viewers yes they do, but the design of AFL suits commercials because of all the stoppages along with 4 quarters and is played over 2 hours.......that's a lot of positives to consider even though we in league should be holding the t.v stations by the short & curly's.....

I wouldn't be surprised to see the day when these grubs from the t.v stations start putting pressure on having 4 X 20minute quarters for there bloody advertising money

its the advertising money that pays the big bucks, and without the big bucks u would be down the local park watching 2nd rate zhite.

It is our game and percession is 9/10ths of the law, if they want to show it, it will cost them plenty.
If they don't then move aside because someone else does..........but don't let them dictate the terms as has happened in the past.

The new TV deal could be worth $1.4 billion.

I'd like to think we (the commission) could negotiate a 1 billion package for the NRL season proper plus .4 billion for the semi-finals and 3 origin games.....or there abouts.

easy. Allow Fox to show all games live. If people don't want to pay for Fox they suffer the breaks. If not, enjoy an uninterrupted game. As I will be tonight
