No-one can deny that Elland Rd is becoming less populated. The crowds are going to get as bad as our spell in the 2nd division in the 80's at this rate. When I was a regular back in the late 80's, the crowd rarely got above 15-16,000.....
So....what is the answer? Is it purely about Premiership football? Is it purely about Bates? Is it pricing? Is it a combination of many factors?
I find it pretty alarming that the club, irrespective of all of the negative factors involved, can't figure out how to put more people in the stadium. I want that guys job, because I think I could do it better. Do you?

LIW is spot on, Bates has done the opposite of attracting fans, he is getting what he deserves.

To say that crowds rarely got above 15,000 or 16,000 in the 80s is rubbish

8-years ago we all bought into his "if you want prem football, you'll have to pay prem prices" so we all invested in the club at sky high prices and we carried on doing it to watch 3rd division football. We've seen plenty of cash leave the club and we've seen our better players flogged to enhance his bank accounts.
We've seen a lack of investment even though we all invested heavily with our own cash. The last 2 seasons have seen more and more fans stay away because they're sick of seeing their hard earned cash not going into the squad. We've seen bates take out loans against future ticket sales and take a mortgage for £2m from GFH and sell debenture shares to god knows who.
The fans are sick of broken promises and and a broken old man

Just been to the gym, my mate who went on Tuesday said he could hear the players talking to each other it was that bad! He said the atmosphere was sterile and the worst he has seen! He also said he thinks Becchio is a cart horse and Varney is a confidence player who needs a run of games and will be class!
1 out of 2 aint bad i guess.

RSL....I can assure you that at most of the games I attended in the mid to late 80's, the crowd was in the mid teens (000,s)....I was referring to the games I attended...obviously the crowds swelled by massive proportions when I wasn't there!

Doc
Spot on, as usual, until I got to the bit about the broken old man. Bates will line his pockets to the bitter end. The falling gates will see the turnover propped up by player sales but frustratingly, the cash cow is taking far longer to die than is good for the long term benefit of the club as well as most fans sanity. I read that a couple of seasons ago the break even gate was in the low to mid 20s. It's well below that now, so hopefully Bates' stewardship is in its death throes, but the stubborn old shirt front appears to be hanging in there just to spite the fans. Bates Out!!

Varney is useless, confident or otherwise. He had one stand out season for Crewe I believe and that is it. We played like a desperate Portsmouth on Tuesday because that's what Warnock et al have built here at ER.
Atmosphere was awful. I remember a wet midweek game against Barnsley where we lost at home and that effectively saw the end of Bremner as manager. That said the crowd was about 15k and the atmosphere far better than Tuesday. ER has become sterile.
My mate's brother is Finance Director for Birmingham City (also a Leeds fan btw) so I'm hoping to get some snippets re takeover very soon.
I can't recall the situation at ER ever being as bad as this for many a year.
