I was watching my mate play a bit of AC3 the other day and I have to say it looked pretty awesome. But I don't wanna pay 40 quid for another game
So which one d'you guys think I should start off with? I have the first one, but it's pretty boring, and everyone keeps saying the sequels are much better.
I know there are some versions which break off from the main series, like brotherhood and revelations etc. Are these any good?
Best Assassin's Creed?

Go for AC II

Brotherhood was similar minus a few changes though. So I suppose it's an improved version of 2
but 2 starts of the Ezio storyline

Assassins Creed is ok but going through the same routine over and over gets annoying.
Assassins Creed II is brilliant.
Brotherhood is one of my all time fav games.
Revelations is actually quite good but I think it suffered on its release coming out so soon after the others.
I haven't played ACIII yet, I don't know how much I'd enjoy it anyway because one of the things that really drew me into other games was Ezio's story.
With no Ezio involved I don't know if I'll be able to get into it as much, reviews I've read haven't been particularly good on that point.

Ac3 is excellent but the lead character is not a patch on Ezio and some of his voice acting is laughable

I think I'll go with ACII then, from what I've read. Cheers guys
