Where its gone wrong........

The reason why Chelsea is struggling now, I believe is because they have no identity.

For the past decade all top teams had an identity.
Barcelona (total football)
Real Madrid (fast paced direct team)
Arsenal (total football mk 2)
Chelsea (strong and robust talented bullies)
Man United (counter attacking width).

2 of those teams have somewhat lost their identity and have since suffered.

Arsenal are one mainly because they have sold off their best players and not reinvested, simple as that.

Chelsea’s even worse in my opinion. Chelsea’s identity although not pleasing to the eye was VERY VERY VERY effective. It won trophies and if continued with some flair included could've won many more. Roman has sacrificed that to play like Barcelona which is ridiculous. In my opinion any real Chelsea fan doesn’t care how they play as long as they win. You could win 38 games 1-0 and any real fan will love the reward at the end.

I hear people saying Chelsea were boring under Jose. In those days every Chelsea fan were loving every second of it and to go 1-0 up and say its game over is quite remarkable. That’s unthinkable for any Premiership team today.

It must be sad thinking of the days when big guys like Ballack, Drogba, Essien, Terry, Alex used to go to cold places like Stoke and not get bullied off the pitch. The only reason why Chelsea would lose matches like that is because they expected 3 points and didn’t try.

Chelsea had an identity, a robust formula that not even Barcelona could break yet Roman attempts to replicate Barcelona. And by trying to become like Barcelona you end up like Arsenal. No offence to Arsenal because their problems are lack of investment. Chelsea have the investment, it’s just that the planning is so wrong.

Create a winning team first them add a few players to make it look pretty if you wish, much like Chelsea formulated with Duff and Robben.

Thats all.....

p.s This article is of echoeing convserations I've had with genuine Chelsea fans so this is not a WUM.

But as a fan wouldn't you want to see your team win all the titles by any means necessary? Even if it means loads of 1-0s?

I'm sure as a Chelsea fan you will find certain Chelsea games more exciting to watch than another game on TV which is actually more entertaining just because of your love for the club.

I agree with the OP to an extent. Our best ever team was built on a solid foundation who could dominate the best around - but here's were I tend to disagree.

We were not always boring - when we had Duff & Robben, in my opinion we were fantastic to watch and able to tear teams to shreds.

Our failure, again in my humble opinion, was after spending large to get were we were, we allowed the squad to stagnate and started relying on economy class signing such as Sidewell, Pizarro, Ben Haim and Malouda, when we should have selected two premium signings a season to keep refreshing the squad.

It's a shame Roman had his head turned by the Barca model because I infinitely prefered the direct attacking style we had. If we'd replaced Duff & Robben like for like and stayed with the formula we had; that lumbering hulk that we became may have been avoided and we wouldn't be having the wholesale changes we're seeing now. Transition on this scale rarely goes smoothly!
