It's a shame that a defender or a defensive midfielder will never win anytime soon. It's all about goals and trophies (Spanish trophies).
I think that the last winner was a defender was Fabio Cannavaro in 2006.
What do you guys think?

Drogba really is one of the ultimate big game/moment players.

Macca, i think you just answered your question - Chelsea defended man-o-man-o from the front and Drogba was at the centre of it...
and RedRob pretty much surmised my point.
And i echo DTKF, Drogba is the quintessence of a 'big game player'. He steps up when required.

Ok put it like this, what defender has come close to defeding to a level similar to the level which messi attacks?
None.
There is a reason messi is frequently described as the goat, and no defenders of this generation are.
Because he's doing things on the pitch and to records that no other player in any other position can achieve.

Both are a result of FIFA making laws to benefit attackers. Tackling is practically outlawed so Messi can dance round defenders knowing the likelihood of losing the ball is slim. Defenders can't tackle him knowing the chances of getting a booking and giving a free kick or pen away are high.

Defenders can't tackle him

Agreed.

Defenders are always in a pair and how good they are (or look) is largely impacted by the strength of the pairing, the formtion the team plays and in some cases how good the attack is.
It's really hard to judge defenders as individuals.
