I think this was the first time in last 8-10 yrs that Rooney was benched for a big knock-out game.
Ever since the season started, i have had this unnerving feeling that something's brewing b/w SAF and Rooney e.g. his fitness problems at the start of the season, RVP always being preferred, SAF publicly saying he has fitness issues, needs more games. Moreover the purchase of Kagawa who plays in the exact same position as Rooney.
I think that SAF does not really want Rooney to renew his current deal which ends in 2 yrs time. Moreover, by that time he will be almost 30 and with his fitness/physique issues,i am not too sure he will get any better.
The whole season Rooney's touch has been just Sunday league class. I understand players need games to get their confidence back and match fitness, but that does not mean u are unable to perform even the most basic tasks of trapping a ball without too much pressure. He looses the ball so often in the final third and he is generally a bit deeper as compared to the striker/wingers so that means the break is well and truely on for the opposition. I think this was one of the main reasons why SAF did not play him.
I feel even RVP has been a bit off the boil for the past 4-5 matches but he still has so much mpre that he can help the team with. His instant ball control, economy of movement, through balls, close control.
Rooney's speed/skill have drastically reduced in the past 2-3 yrs. Although he still has creativity/vision but what good is a creative brain when the body cannot execute those thoughts. Welbeck may not be a gr8 finisher(and he has time on his side) but he has very good ball control, quick feet, athletic physique, speed, and his 1-2 touch play is sometimes a joy to behold. I also feel that although he may not have the best 1st touch, he has one of the best 2nd touch of any player i have seen. Also he works way harder than Rooney does.
Does anybody seriously feel that currently Rooney is the best player in our squad??
If no, then why is he the highest paid player.
I think if we can get a substantial bid from the likes of Madrid/PSG for Rooney, we should consider it.
What say???
Something's not right

What did welbeck offer that Rooney could not of?
What did he do to a decent level that Rooney couldn't not of done better.

thats the point 'could have', rooney was atrocious in the first leg, so why should he have started the second leg

Rooney isn't one known for sticking to his discipline...If he was tasked with closing Alonso down, do you think he'd have done it? Rooney is a player who will usually go where ever the ball is. I don't think he'd have stuck to his task last night.
To flip the question, what do you think Rooney would have done better. The chances that Welbeck had were far from easy and it is entirely likely that Rooney would have missed them too. Barring the one that was offside anyway.

I remember Rooney missing a hugely important chance last night.

Rooney scored an absolute wonder goal at the weekend.
Welbeck simply is not capable of doing that.
He isn't even capable scoring five goals so far this season

First ten seconds shows a Welbeck goal every bit as good as the Rooney stike.

Once in his career? Great example.
Rooneys capable of genius, welbeck can't even muster the damn ability score regularly.
He just isn't putting in the effort in front f goal and needs to practice more. Big time Charlie thinks he's made it.
He needs to stop letting the pressure get to him man up, and train more.
He looks like a deer in headlights in front of goal.

Stretty is deluded.
I had a German mate saying today "That Welbeck lad is amazing! Do you play him all the time?"

Your mate can't watch a lot of football. Amazing, what dross.
The best players are amazing. Not half decent ones that can't score in a brothel
