Reducing salaries the Barca way

MANCHESTER CITY plan to revolutionise their payments to players on the lines of the Barcelona model for rewarding success.

Basic salaries, particularly contract renewals, will be REDUCED – but bonuses will be INCREASED.

It means top stars earning £6million-a-year could double their money if they deliver trophies.

City’s chief executive Ferran Soriano and football director Txiki Begiristain are working on the new-style contracts, which will have the biggest incentives for success in the game.

Barcelona superstars like Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Cesc Fabregas are subject to that regime at the Catalan club.

And Soriano and Begiristain know the detail of Barcelona’s deals through their time at the Nou Camp.

Begiristain is currently going through City’s contracts with a fine-tooth comb and is understood to have been staggered at the basic salaries enjoyed by players like Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez.

City hope to establish top, basic salaries at around £140,000-a-week – rather than nearer £200,000.

They know they have to address their basic wages in line with UEFA’s financial fair play rules and they want the emphasis based more on rewarding success.

From the Star but sounds realistic

"Good idea in principle but can't see it working at City if they want to attract the likes of Falcao or Neymar."

The premise is that the likes of Falcao (like Aguero, RVP etc) can justify their wages in the main. Tis many of the others on the wage bill who collectively can be a drain will producing very little ROI.

any club that has just renewed Messi's contract is going to have a mega wage bill

"any club that has just renewed Messi's contract is going to have a mega wage bill"

What is Barcas wage bill + revenues ??
I assume at the very least they break even on that front.

only just, Barca, like Madrid are significantly in debt.

"only just, Barca, like Madrid are significantly in debt."

Given their relative successes, I would have expected their wage/revenue ratios to be at least something akin to Man Utd or the G00ns.

Yeah, I've seen some other stuff from this guy in the past (very well researched) .

The question with debt in football, is how much of it is what some call "soft" (debt that the creditors could call in but don't seem to be bothered about) , and whether the club as a "going concern" would continue as - is if all the creditors called in the debts.

For Man Utd, obviously the Glazers cannot.
But they would just be forced to sell up (for so much) and the club as a going concern would not be affected (just new owners) .

Just how much the Barca/Madrid total debts are, is another story.

the advantage Real Madrid and Barca have is that no Spanish bank nor the government (who now own Bankia , previously Caja Madrid , who leant the Kaka and Ronaldo money) would dare bankrupt either club.
