Sully Should Play

We are Sitting at the top and lets hope we stay there till the end of the season.

In my HONEST opinion I believe that we should play Sully inbetween the sticks to help us gain those remaining points that we require.

At the present if the oponents shoot any where from 20 to 40 yards out and it is on target !!!! the chances are its in the onion bag.

Although Woods has come on this season he still remains Flat footed and a
liability. He must learn to get up on his toes and gain the ability to pick up his own body weight. (So he can dive)

Sully has the experience to see us over the line and into the Championship.

I watch Frodo Baggins on Sky's Goals on Sunday and thought he came across quite well. Glad hew realises the need for a reserve team, and I hope we gain automatic promotion for him to bring in the players he wants.

I agree with the sentiment that he isnt a GREAT goalkeeper but he is young and learning and improving.
The funny thing is that he has played in all but one of our games and we are top of the league.
Now that cant be JUST be down to the defenders in front of him.
Pegdog, you say "if he had saved it what a belter of a save it would have been"
You could say that about almost any goal that goes past a diving goalkeeper.

NY - you make a valid point about outfield players not getting as much attention paid to their mistakes.
I have just watched to highlights again on sky sports and still cant believe that no-one has mentioned Cotterills lack of an attempt at a tackle as their player cut in before crossing for their second goal.

Cotterill hasn't been the same player since Saunders
left. He doesn't seem to do any defending, tracking back or tackling. It maybe bad to say it but he was our worst player sat and not for the first time i've had this discussion with zigger and dr4e about him. As opposed to copps on the other side or Husband.

Canadian you can't compare woods to hart in a million years! The defending in league 1 is no where near as good as the prem, you will always get more shots to save. Not to mention the quality of strikers is not as good as the prem. I wonder out of how many of those saves he's made has spilled out to an attacking player or has ended up in the net afterwards. As i've said earlier he hasn't performed to badly this season, but I do fear next season against better quality of players and teams he will come unstuck.

I reckon if Rob Jones wanted Sully instead of Woods then that's what would have happened. So I'll go along with Rob Jones on this one.

Hound, as far as I'm concerned Mr Cotterill is a one trip pony. This ability to cross the ball which thank fully we've had players on hand to score. Re the rest of his game he'd be luck to be playing non league football right now.

If he could get away with walking on to take set pieces then walking off I'm sure he would do it.

Sully had a good game against Bournemouth, but at 43 he cannot have a long-term future in the team.

When I have seen Woods he distributes the ball better than Sully and is more comfortable coming away from his line and acting as a sweeper like the best of the modern goalkeepers. In contrast Sully would often be hesitant in his distribution; he was OK when we had big men like McCammon that he could pick out with his kicks although this became very predictable, but he often sent the ball to the opposition and even putting the ball straight into touch was not uncommon; I think Woods shows more variation.

Shots from distance are all that many teams can hope for against our current defence, so there are probably more per game than was the case in the Championship when Sully was in goal. Consequently we see Woods conceding more.

These are generalisations I know, but the corollary of this is that Woods might be judged better than Sully because he probably does not let in as many goals struck from close range.

And I do remember Sully letting in soft goals as a result of careless mistakes from time to time.

Woods is a decent keeper. Some aspects of his game need work but then who can't improve. As for the remarks made about Cotterill, I am stunned. When he is on song he is close to unplayable. When he has a poor day offensively the one thing that you can depend on is that he will be racing back to tackle and help Quinn out. Do you blokes watch Rovers on ceefax?

Just to be clear albi - unlike 1Pel - I AM NOT having a go at Cotterill -i do understand what a valuable player he is to the team.
The point i raised was that he made a half hearted attempt at a tackle leading to their second goal.
I raised the point to emphasise what NY had said about outfield players not getting as much stick from fans as a goalie when they make a mistake.

If you think albi cotts races and tackles back you're very much mistaken and maybe its you who watches on ceefax! Offensively he's superb but defensively can he be bothered? That's the opinion I see of him.

Sorry I agree with azza he can't tackle, sure he tracks back but rarely gets close enough to block crosses. His ability to jockey is non existent, his man often skips past him. Defensively 2 out of 10. Good job he can cross a ball!
