How many out there also had this amazing yet underrated console? At the time it was the fastest, strongest console out. It had plenty of games that were 80/100 or above. Yet It was the PS2 with new DVD capabilities gimmick and Disney software that pushed it out of the window. Parents drooled over the thought of having a relatively inexpensive DVD player and giving their kids harmless Micky Mouse games.
The rest is history and there I am left with memories of when a video game system was aimed primarily at gamers. Some of the greatest gaming moments of my life came from this system. Here is a list of some of my favourites off the top of my head.
Skies of Arcadia
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing
Soul Calibur
House of the Dead II
Virtua Fighter 3
Virtua Tennis
All 2K sports games before EA came in and created a monopoly
Feel free to discuss any games you loved or hated.
Sega Dreamcast

I fully agree graphics arent everything, but when some of the games arent even that good and they only have what 4 ips and dont seem to looking to make any more the future doesnt look great.
Also add in the big IPs arent yearly either and with no 3rd party games apart from PS3/360 rehashes and now have priced out the casual market............................

had probably 100 games and 1 lovely little boot disk that I had to load up first and then bang in the copied disk.....the good old days of easy chipping my cousins had a PS1 chipped simply by using blu-tack

While I agree that the Dreamcast was indeed brilliant, I think you are being a bit unfair to the PS2, it is after all the bestselling home console of all time. If by Disney games you mean Kingdom Hearts, then that’s rather unfair as that is a very good game. Also if you look at some of the Rest of the PS2 library, you can hardly refer to it as a ‘kiddie Console’ GTA, Timesplitters, The Getaway, Shadow of The Colossus (one of the greatest games ever), Ico, the list goes on. Although I do agree with you about the DVD player element, but you can hardly criticize it for having a good selling point, that certainly wasn’t the sole selling point, for example I know my parents didn’t buy me it for that.
Sony obtained a lot of ip’s in the PS1 era, as it was easier to develop for than cartridge based systems and it was easier to make more expansive games. This carried over to the PS2, developers were more trusting of the Playstation brand as opposed to the new Xbox. Nintendo don’t really factor into this as their main sales have always come from 1st parties (Mario, Zelda etc) as opposed to 3rd. Couple that with the fact that SEGA as a brand has never done amazingly outside of Japan and you have a real problem.
A major problem was that the Dreamcast came out at the wrong time, had they developed further and released at the same time as the PS2 and Xbox it could well have done a lot better. As it happened they attempted to get the jump on it and people were more content to wait for the PS2 which was going to be more powerful and all-round better.
However, the real killer for the Dreamcast, was its copy prevention or rather lack of it. It was far to easy to pirate games. If games don’t sell the console fails it’s as simple as that. Developers don’t want to develop for something if they know they won’t see a return on it and if a games console has no games it dies.
It is a huge shame, I love my Dreamcast and I really wish it had done better, it was truly innovative and way ahead of its time, it absolutely nailed online play years before PSN and Xbox Live, it had brilliant memory cards and some very good games. Crazy Taxi, Shenmue and Jet Set Radio anyone? However, some areas of it were poorly conceived and sadly it failed.

TBF, it's been so long that my memory blended both criticisms of ps1 and ps2.

The Dreamast was a classic. Sonic Adventure and Shenmue were the two games I loved playing

Shenmue 3 will probably never happen. I played the first one on Dreamcast and the second on Xbox but without the 3rd it will seem half hearted game.
