Sorry guys. I know that we must all be getting sick of the Maynard saga by now... but I felt the need to discuss Leicester Citys proposed bid for Shane Long.
As I understand it, Shane Long is another striker that only has 1 year left on his contract. The rumour that I've heard today is that LCFC are going to bid £7m for him. I know that Shane Long is a very good player.. and enjoyed a very good season this year.. but is he really worth roughly £3m more than Maynard?
If this rumour is true then it makes LCFC's bid for Maynard seem even more insulting than initially thought.
I've said before that if we get offered good money for a player, that does not wish to commit to the club, then we should accept. I've also said before that if Maynard does go... I hope it is to anyone but Leicester.

"How many strikers in the championship do you know of in the last 4 seasons that have been signed by a prem team not as Gd as Maynard who went for higher than 7mil in similar circumstances???"

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm not that sure.
The point is that none have wanted to risk that level of investment in him (as of today) and have preferred to go with the likes of Graham, Morison and Bothroyd.
All for less money I might add.
Best case scenario for BCFC is that he signs a 3 year contract and goes for the money you want in a year or two. Worse case you lose him for nothing next season.
Good luck with it as either way I don't think he'll be coming to LCFC.

Fair play Joby and likewise gd luck for the season and at least your one decent Leicester fan who doesnt shout abuse and hopefully all this on NM will draw to a conclusion by Fri as its not doing any one any favours at present...

I think we can all agree on that one.
The ironic thing is I think that Leicester's bid may end up being instrumental in BCFC keeping him. We've put off potential PL bidders who may have sniffed around with a £3-4m bid, but are put off by the high asking price. This leaves NM without a PL option and will probably extend his stay at BCFC.
The only sticking point I can see is the price he'll want as a release clause. I doubt NM will want it to be any higher than £5m as that would put off many potential suitors. A release clause that is too high may persuade him that it's better not to sign and increase his options.

I meant to say:
" .... better not to sign and 'limit' his options."

Joby,
Some good comments there. You seem to be in a minority in terms of Leicester fans that can make a point without being arrogant and/or throwing insults around.
It is quite possible that we could accept a bid for less money from a PL club. I agree to an extent that this would seem foolish... however we Bristol City fans would not see it that way if Nicky were to sign for you and score against us with a goal that could potentially prevent us from having a tilt at the play-offs, or dare I say.. see us relegated.
We tried to sign Scott Sinclair before he joined Swansea. We were quoted £2m by Chelsea because it is known that our owner has a bit of wedge.. He was eventually sold to Swansea for £500k.

Hi Guys
Just another LCFC fans take on the Maynard saga
1. I think the rumour of the bid for Long, and that's all it is is an attempt by Sven to put pressure on you guys to accept our offer
2. Maynard is a better striker than Long - In my opinion
3. I don't beleive Maynard wants to come to Leicester and is probably only interested in a Premier league club
4. What would worry me about Maynard is obviously the injury he had, but also the fact that I think that he wants to run down his contract with Bristol City and become a free agent - he could obviously do the same to Leicester - That is certainly not right in my eyes
Have had some great away days at your old ground Ashton Gate and some good banter with your fans in the days before seggregation.
All the best for the new season no matter what happens with the Maynard saga and seriously hope you don't get screwed by Mr Maynard.

Thanks for the comments Bloomfield.
If your 1st point is correct.. that could very easily back fire on your club officials. To try and force our hand by bidding more for a striker at another championship club (who also has only 1 year left on his contract) .. could easily be interpreted as a lack of respect towards Bristol City Football club.
Either way its not long until the 1st of September...and then we will have heard the last of this ridiculous saga.. until January!!

Someone asked what striker went for more than £7m from the Championship - what about Carroll? Less goals than Maynard for Newcastle when they were in the NPC, yet went to Liverpool for £30m the following season.

I guess we can all find examples of players who have cost a lot more and players who have cost a lot less. In the end it's just down to the value placed on the player by the buyer and the seller that has any relevance.
Instinct tells me that a PL club will not bid over £3.5m, but I might be wrong. We're not entirely sure what LCFC have bid, although rumours say around £4.5-5m. BCFC obviously think that, at that value, it's worth taking the gamble of keeping him.

The cradle of this discussion is
What will happen if Maynard goes off like a fire cracker and scores goals at will (it could happen)
If he does too well, it will only be a matter of months before one of the big boys come in and make an offer which we cant refuse.
Then we will see just how good a player Brett Pitman is.
