His corner in the 99' final that was flicked on by Teddy to Ole.

I also agree with that. The thing which frustrated me about the latter day BEcks was that you rarely, if ever, saw him run to the touchline and whip crosses in. He would ususall just cross the ball fro wherever he happened to be - usually far deeper than he should have been. Some of them were still great crosses but you'll never be as effective from that position. He didn't get behind defenses at all (the area from which he was once at his deadliest).

He didnt because he couldn't. To get past players requires pace or skill which he never had. The way he use to beat players was by using Neville to draw them out then getting on the end of nevs return pass.

When nev retired beckham never formed that understanding with the other right backs In te England team hence why he just crossed from wherever he coul

Have to admit if I was picking my best utd 11 Becks would be in it. I know people going to,say no way ronaldo would be in there first but Beckham gave utd something special. The amount of assists was amazing.

I have absolutely nothing against Beckham. Fantastic
footballer with an incredible right foot. His kicking action unique. A film named after his famous free kicks, played for top clubs. Helped get the Olympics to London, passionate player for his country, recovered from various setbacks including being vilified for the red card in 1998. Tough time at Real Madrid and then forced Capello to play him and helped Madrid win the league. Top,top player. Some people forget how good he was at United. For those I suggest they just look at a DVD highlights from 1998-2000 say. The number of crosses he put on a plate for Yorke, Cole, Sheringham, Solsjkaer was untrue. High quality delivery, first time passing, crossing and up and down that touchline forging a fantastic partnership with gary Neville. United through and through.
Thanks Becks for the memories !

Sick of the bloke. Thought he was bigger than United. Expected Fergie to treat him differently than the rest of the squad. Great dead ball kicker though. Had no pace and couldnt beat a player (a major disadvantage if you play on the wing) and couldn't/ didn't want to head it.(ruined his hair?)

RBW - Nonsense mate. He didn't need to beat a player, he whipped in cross after cross of quality. Revisit for example 1999 season and his contribution was awesome. Single handedly pulled England through their qualifying group to the WC finals. Tremendous work rate. Agree about the heading thing though. Sheringham had no pace either. Cleverley does not have much. Even RVP is not that rapid. Doesn't matter if you are a quality footballer. Too much importanc egiven in this country at all levels to speed, always has been..Tony Daley,Dalian Atkinson,SWP,Kenwyn Jones,Lennon ..etc ..headless chickens all. Even Walcott has taken some time to find any kind of touch.
A great player for United and England !

The amount of assists and goals beckham got is not compatible to amount of goals and assists Ronaldo contributed over the course of seasons. Beckham I would averagely say got about 20 assists and around 8 or 9 goals.

Ronaldo scored 42 in one season

Mixed bag for me.

Loved him when he was Manchester United footballer David Beckham. Found it annoying when he became David Beckham, celebrity, footballer.

From the start of 98-99 season to the end of 2001, he was pretty much at his peak as a player, one of the top players in the world.

However I feel once he became England captain and particularly after that brilliant free-kick against Greece, he became more and more about the brand/celebrity rather than the footballer.

115 caps for England is not to be sniffed at, but many of these were earned when his ability probably didn't warrant inclusion in the squad.

You have to look to Fergie and say he got the decision right for United when Becks was sold to Madrid in 2003.
=====================

Agreed, what did it for me was when he went on that promotional tour of himself in Asia.

A truly gifted football player who took his eye off the ball. He had the potential to be considered along greats at the club but wanted to be a spice boy. Thank heavens he's retired. Wish SKY would spare us any more Beckham mania
