Sorry - Bale article, but what's this??

http://metro.co.uk/2013/06/19/real-madrid-expect-to-complete-gareth-bale-transfer-from-spurs-by-next-month-3847155/

Real Madrid are expecting to complete the signing of Gareth Bale by the end of next month after he reportedly set his heart on a move to the Bernabeu.

Madrid are increasingly confident they will be able to pull off the transfer, with the deal set to be ramped up in the next week when Carlo Ancelotti is confirmed as their new manager.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Bale finally told Tottenham of his desire to move to Madrid this week and chairman Florentino Perez is now expected to begin negotiations imminently.

A move for Bale has been speculated for months but has been held up by Madrid’s long-running managerial saga, with Ancelotti only given the green light to complete his switch from PSG in the last few days.

The former Chelsea boss is believed to have consented to the signing of Bale, and a source close to Madrid has told Marca that they expect the transfer to be complete by next month.

The publication says Perez is expecting to present the Welsh winger to the media at a glamorous ceremony before the end of July, and that further big-name signings are promised.

The news will come as a blow to Spurs, who have been on the end of Madrid’s determination to land players before after they pulled off the signing of Luka Modric last summer following months of negotiations.

A fee for Bale is yet to be agreed, but it is thought it could be upwards of £85million, with Madrid admitting last month they’d be willing to splash out £100million to get their man.

I know this is the silly season, but is this just silly, or should I take this at least half-serious?

Advice and comments please.

What they expect has little relevance to anything. How is this even a story. Unless there have been some developments then what is new?

100 mill though. Ridiculous. Real Madrid have gone mad. Snap their hands off for that.

£100m could soften ANY blow

Think of the reinforcements that would buy, or a third of the new stadium?

The first thing you should always do is identify the word choice that the report uses.

Here are some key words/phrases:

"reportedly"
"believed"
"confident they will be able to"
"it is thought"

All this does is describe something they THINK may happen, it does not in anyway describe something that will happen.

They also use the word "expect/expected" throughout because they understand that expecting something will happen is a matter of opinion and it does not mean it will necessarily happen. Therefore, they have covered their tracks on the likelihood of what they have wrote doesn't come off.

Something you should also notice is that when the odd chance one of these stories does happen, the journalist continues with the inverted pyramid format but decides that the phrase "as we revealed to you..." should be high up on the story!

Speculation interests people, but at the same time if it bothers you then you should stick to the BBC Sport page and your club website.
