Rooney will NOT leave unless he is replaced

Our chief executive has just stated that Man Utd are not afraid of letting players run their contracts down. Berbatov was allowed to run his contract down into his final year. Nani has only 1 year left on his contract and is still a Man Utd player. Reports are stating he may still stay. Thus, it is likely Rooney will stay at Man Utd at least until his final year. Will he be a major player anymore? In my opinion if he does not sort his form out, no. Man Utd as a club have shown that they are happy to let players on high wages sit on the bench or even worse, not make match squads. Berbatov who was on more than 120k a week spent nearly a season and a half on the bench and in some cases not even in the squad (CL final). Nani last season was also a victim of this.

Furthermore, Woodward has stated that "There are no contract renewals that are being discussed. I am not sitting down with any player on an extension and there is no trigger date in the diary," said Woodward.
"Would we be afraid to run a contract down? Of course not."

Thus, from this we can derive United's hierarchy are not all that concerned about the money side of it. It would not have been business sense to let Berbatov and Nani get into their final year of their contract without selling them. Yet here we are, Nani is still not sold without even getting a renewal and Berbatov was sold for peanuts.

Rooney additionally is a player who brings a lot of marketing appeal to the Utd brand. Until Utd can find an able replacement from an off the field perspective, I really can't see us selling him. For me, this is possibly why we have had some reported interest in Ronaldo. The marketing side of any deal with Rooney is imperative. United won't sell because they have to sell or give in to Rooney's demands. United will sell because they feel we have replaced Rooney from both an on the field perspective and off the field perspective.

Thoughts?

We will need to buy if he is sold no question.

Rvp and Hernandez and kags as a ten is not enough.

Don't mention welbeck, he's crap. And if the other days game is anything to go by he ain't spent his summer practising hitting the target.

Like we spent all of the 80 million on a shiny new superstar named Valencia?

We already have too many strikers and in general a stupidly large squad. We can improve by subtraction. We won't need to rotate for the sake of it like Fergie used to do and the forms of players will fluctuate less.

Rooney wants to play as a striker and lost his effectiveness as a supporting striker. We have 3 strikers in the books. If we are desparate we can bring back rvp and start either Welbeck or Hernandez. We are not selling them, so they have to play.

I was not too worried about Ronaldo leaving, to somehow try and scare me into thinking Rooney leaving means the end of the world is the greatest delusion. This here is a player whose first touch is that of a sax offender.

I won't but I can see many idiots who will worship anyone just because he scores goals wanting him. He is just too tainted.

Redas, good post. Not having Rooney can make us a more rounded and solid side with players playing regularly in their favoured positions, as well as allowing us to play some more expansive passing football - something we've struggled to do with Rooney in the middle of the park.

A bit tounge in cheek maybe

In all honesty I think most would agree that a Man Utd without Rooney is ever closer. However, I feel next season (summer) is a better time to sell him.
