Leave the big man alone.

So another transfer window completed. Harry Redknapp can wind up the window on the drivers side of his car now. Jim White goes back into the cryogenic freezer for another year, or at least until January.

United have done a bit of business, we signed "a big man", "the fuzzy haired one", "microphone head" "a battering ram". All of the above seem to have been applied to our new midfielder, in truth, he is just a much needed addition to the weakest area of the side.

Some posts I have seen have included remarks such as "I am sure the team will get more red cards now" (I work it out that he has only been sent off twice since 2007), "he doesn't play in the Manchester United style", "we will just lump the ball up to him... become a Tony Pullis wet dream" "he is not a Manchester United player". Well, being deliberately facetious, he is now, so you will have to come to terms with it!

The cries that we should have gone in for Ozil are loud and proud, but I haven't seen anyone suggest where we would actually play him. He is left footed, so shall we just plonk him on the left... which is not his position? This would therefore render him about as effective as Phil Jones as our right back.. "let's break out the sandpaper Moysie, we have too many square pegs for these round holes"! Let's play him behind the striker... (well, it is his position after all) that's fine but as soon as Rooney was made to stay, this is a deal not worth doing. The idea is that Wayne shall play and hopefully sign a new deal, we have our number 10 there. We have Welbeck who is the number 10 in the making, we have Kagawa as a number 10 waiting for selection, we have Van Persie (if you wish for Hernandez to feature up top) who can play there too. I won't even really touch on the overwhelming desire for Januzaj and Lingard and Powell to blossom.

I just don't see we needed to bung up the squad with someone else who we were not likely to play to their full potential (albeit his quality is not in doubt). He has a great assist record, the statistics for their respective scoring records however, are very similar. I think this is the key; Fellaini is an effective player in the exact right position for United, in the very area we needed to strengthen. He is proven in the league, he knows it well, he has grown up here. He is a full international in a very promising Belgian squad. The key word is "effective".

If we can actually get wingers and attacking full backs to cross a ball properly, or deliver a good set piece, he will be effective in the box. In the last 10 minutes of a game we are chasing, we need to get the ball in the box, we need someone of the stature to be effective. Surely we can put the snobbery to one side if it earns us extra points in a season?

Carrick or Anderson can play forward passes from midfield, let Fellaini add the strength, the power, break up opposition play.

The bottom line is that, as champions, we have added something to our title winning squad, that can only be good, can't it?

I think its a decent signing, can't hurt having a guy who is nearly 6ft 5" in midfield, especially when we come up against the likes of Yaya. Its a nice option to have and I think he will do well.

I just wish the papers would talk about his footballing ability rather than his hair

I'm already looking forward to seeing how he gets on, he could very well take his game up a notch or two... and he could also be a wildcard, in Europe.

Best to remember that usually the most vocal critics on here on the ones with very little insight. They just want galactico signings and Barca style football, god knows what they get out of "supporting" UTD

I actually think Fellaini playing could give us a further option of playing kagawa as an attacking midfielder rather than an outright number 10 making us not have to be overly reliant on having to play carrick in every game

Just a layman's view though obviously

I wrote an article a while back about the options Fellaini might bring, including him taking over Carrick's place, occasionally:

I think Fellaini and Clevs/Ando would offer us a new dimension, with a bit more drive. Of course, I fully expect Carrick to play plenty of games and rate him as one of the best CMs in the league.

OP, nice post!

JiSung,
Just read your old article. Interesting that Rooney doesn't appear in those formations. He does complicate matters, doesn't he, as he isn't as effective as the alternatives if we want the person in that position to function partly as the third point in midfield.
