The 26-year-old Argentinian centre-half was heavily tipped to make the switch to Old Trafford going into the summer after former Red Devils' boss Sir Alex Ferguson had kept tabs on him for some time.
However Garay's move never materialised and the player has now broken his silence to lift the lid on why he is not plying his trade in the Premier League this season.
Garay, who was tipped to become a long-term replacement for Rio Ferdinand at the Theatre of Dreams, said: "I believed I was going to join Manchester United in the summer. The deal was nearly closed but finally Benfica did not accept the offer.
"I believe the exit of Ferguson has influenced the deal. Moyes did not believe in me as much but that's not a problem.
"I am happy at Benfica and have a lot of dreams and ambitions for this season. Now I only think about the present which is Benfica but it's never possible to discard anything in the future."

P.S: I've no idea how genuine these quotes are.

Neither are Smalling, Jones and Evans.. Out of interest, how many times have you seen this Garay?

Jesus wept, you think Evans is poor then you know fook all about football!

Jesus wept, u made up me saying 'Evans is poor.'
Evans is good, if not a little inconsistent. He's certainly not a top centre back though.
I would be very worried if the future of our defence was Johnny Evans, unless you can explain to me how he is on a level with the likes of Vidic, Rio, Stam, Pallister etc....

Never understood the hype around Garay.

Smalling is better than Garay. It is not even close.

The same Smalling who is prone to errors in both judgement and concentration ? I'm not advocating we should have signed Garay, but i think we need to sign an accomplished CB to replace Rio, not hope for the beat with players who quite frankly are nowhere near as good as rio was at their age.

And Garay is not prone to errors? We have 3 fantastic young cbs in the club who need games and will play them over garay any day of the week.
Not sure looking to Portugal for defenders is a wise option considering their poor record in developing CBs

Good news he isn't that good anyway and the reported 20 million needs to be spent in central midfield on a playmaker.

French did you actually read the post, Evans is a very good player and was vital to united winning the title in 09, 11 and last season. Always played in the biggest games hence there's talent and pally at first was very shaky.....I'm defending Evans after someone called him poor ffs and not comparing him to anyone all called him world class for crying out load! A poor defender does not play this amount of games for united and defender like he did against ronaldo and co for Northern Ireland and he will be a big part of uniteds future. Also this defender for Porto, ffs never played here and most probably another sideshow bib who can't defend for toffee......I take it you've never seen him play and judge him on another sad computer game

Im one of those who believes its time to give Smalling & Jones a extended run as our two central defenders.
They formed a excellent partnership at under 21's and its no surprise they where both snapped up by Fergie.
Time for them to be given their preferred roles and see how they get on.
