The following is from today's Independent:
Manchester United go into Sunday’s vital match at Chelsea with manager David Moyes insisting they are still the biggest football club in the world . United sit seventh in the Premier League, face a scramble for Champions’ League qualification, and their share price has dropped 16 per cent since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, but a defiant Moyes (below) said: “Manchester United are not only the biggest club in this country but the biggest club in the world. Some of the results have not been what you want but I wouldn’t say the aura is fading; in fact I think the opposite."
The manager downplayed suggestions that United, after a frustrating summer transfer window, risk missing out on other future targets. “The amount of big players wanting to join Manchester United is incredible," said Moyes, who was spotted watching games in Italy and France last week. “Players are not looking at the share price. What they are looking at is the football club and what it stands for. It is renowned throughout the world, wherever you go, and I don’t see that [changing] at all."
I want to know how many of our supporters believe that we're the biggest club in the world because if someone asked me 'who are the biggest club in the world?' I would answer 'Real Madrid'. My reason for this is because if you take in their history in terms of success, big players signed and fan-base you surely can't get bigger than them. Another reason is that I can't imagine someone like Valencia being at a club of that magnitude for as long as he has for United.

Doesn't really help when Phil Jones and Michael Carrick are your midfield!

it should help when it comes to paying for their replacements

I'll give you £10 million for the pair and I'll throw in Mars bar.

United (or any other English club for that matter) will never be the first choice for the very best South American and southern European players.
Barca and Real Madrid are the ultimate destination for players from those regions (players who very often are the world's elite players).

yes we are the Biggest club in the world. We dont win everything. Sometimes we can go long times with out winning much... we went 26 years without winning the league ( won a few FA Cups which was a bigger deal that the league in them days) but during that period we were still the biggest club in the world.

Does it matter? If your decline continues, how big you are becomes less relevant, particularly to possible transfer targets who have better choices.
