if lloris goes we will just get someone else

laudrup is massively overated. not sure what the shock is, from the outside looking in they have been in relegation form since their cup win, and laudrup looks rather disinterested lately

swansea may just have saved their season, they were heading for the drop.

Spurs soon to feel the cruel wind that is overspending chasing "Champions" league soon I think Andy.
The Bale cash has been wasted.

i like it when people say this. it makes them look stupid.

all last season all we got was "one man team" , "mid table without bale"

well, bale has gone, and we are still more or less where we have been for the last 3 or 4 years, so simple logic therefore dictates that at least some of the money must have been put to good use… or we would just be mid table

understand?

Time will tell.
So all your new millionaire new signings are on peanuts?

nope. but i will try and make this simple for you.

we have lots of players earning big money, they leave, so we don't pay them any more, but we have lots of players who come in on big money - what is the overall effect?

the answer is that we have more or less the same wage bill as we started with

what is the overall effect? Players who come in on big money then decide that they ought to be paid even more. Moral: make sure they're not being payed too much to start with.

Swansea? There are/were too many teams worse than them for them to go down. Sacking a manager just because the team is only 2 points above the drop, when in fact there are 8 other teams who would love to be in that situation, is crazy. Laudrop obviously thought that, for the sake of the club, now that they'd got into Europe for the first time in their history they ought to make the most of it. The owner thought everything should be put into the PL. I think Laudrup had the right idea; I think they could do Europe and still be reasonably certain of not going down.

Unfortunately it looks as though we're stuck with Lerner for the foreseeable future. He certainly is not one of the best owners in the league, as he was responsible for appointing McLeish as well as agreeing to sign all those extremely overpriced players that MON wanted to buy. I don't necessarily think he wants to see Villa stuck in midtable, but the simple fact is he can't afford to run a football club. Our wage structure is so limited that we are unable to go for players that we desperately need to boost our quality, like Defour. He may want to help but he just doesn't have the resources for us to go forward in my view. We should be fighting for the top seven and a European spot, not fighting it out among 10 or so average other clubs to stay up.

Lambert is another I'm unsure about. Does he sign some of the dross he has signed because he is forced into it, or is he just not very good in the market either? He did sign Benteke, true, but he's really the only player he's signed who is true quality and could play for a big club. No other player he has signed could, with the possible exception of Vlaar (and I'm not sure he's that good).

What Villa need is investment. We're still considered a true traditional English club with a proud history and one of the best stadiums in England. We're the biggest club in the second biggest city in England. We SHOULD be doing much better realistically. So, if Lerner was to find someone who could invest in the club to make us comeptitive near the top, he would be being so selfish not to sell up. I do not see Lerner being able to make us competitive again, and if other fans think he can they are blindly supporting their club.

Lerner's funded Lambert to the tune of £40M so far, not huge by PL standards but not peanuts either. Lambert will sign a new deal because Lerner will promise him serious funds. The funds won't be at the MON level (which towards the end were wasted anyway) but they will be significant. Competitive? What does that mean? I think we'll end up where we are now at the end of the season, a lot better than last year and with the scalps of several top clubs; next year I hope to see us knocking on the top-7 door, and with more scalps to our credit.

I don't blame Lerner too much over MON. Lerner wanted to put a brake on after 3 years, basically sell to buy; MON was supposed to move on some high earners if he wanted more. Unfortunately Lerner trusted MON to do that and gave him some more cash; MON didn't move on anybody, and wanted more funds at the end of year 4, hence the bust up. At the end of year 3 MON had the Barry money; he should have found a Barry replacement, but it went on the likes of Dunne and Collins.

Thanks for making it so simple Chronic as I'd never have thought of that myself
Is it actually true though? Is the wage bill sustainable without CL cash? I suppose we'll find out when the Spu_ds accounts are published. I have a gut feeling your new arrivals may be on a tad more than your outgoing lads as that often happens (unless you are Villa of course and they come from divison 3 )

Wages for all clubs are more of a millstone than the transfer fees.

As I said previously - time will tell.
