Destiny!

Funny how things work out! When I was a little kid, my family lived in Alderson Rd., just round the corner from the pig bin!! My dad wasn't really into football, but I remember him buying me a blunt uniform for Xmas! I must have been about 5 at the time, and footy wasn't really on my agenda as yet (luckily for me)!

We later moved to Shiregreen where most of my mates were wednesday supporters. Naturally they got me involved in the sport I love and the club that has long been a major part of my life. Looking back on the long list of joys the mighty Wednesday have brought me over the years........promotions, cup-quarter finals, semi-finals and finals, a Boxing-Day thumping of the blunts, a cup semi-final victory over our eternal enemy. a temporary spell in european competition and a league cup final victory (to give the competition its real name) over Man Utd , I thank destiny for being so kind as to guide me towards the blue and white two thirds of the city!

Sure, there have been bad times too, relegations, the threat of going into administration, not to mention the Hillsbrough tragedy, but God has always seemed to guide us through these terrible times and helped us avoid the worst! Other teams may well have crumbled under such circumstances or, like the blunts, suffered a spell in the bottom tier of english league football!!

We may not have had too much to shout about over the years, but at least we can all thank God we aren't the cash-strapped, success-starved blunts who dwindle in our shadows! They may be well situated in this league right now, but so were we a year ago and look where we ended up.....and they will still probably lose a few of their key players!

With a couple more additions to our squad, I'm pretty sure we'll climb this table and finally show who's the dominant force in Sheffield as we mount our charge towards the championship and give creedence to our pre-season, bookies second- favourite automatic promotion tag!!

I wonder if any of you have similar stories to tell, where, but for a twist of fate, would now have been following another team? UTO!!

Trueblue, didn't the number 4 go from Firth Park, thru Shiregreen, down Newman Road and into town. Anyway, from what era were you in Shiregreen ? I was there from birth to '73. Still have a few Aunts and cousins knocking about there. 'Tis a small world.

Anyway back to the thread. I was born in Sheffield, on a Wednesday, at 31 Clematis Road, S5 and I have blue and white eyes. First game was Newcastle '67 (been through this before on the old 606) and was more interested in the balloons they let off (Centenary celebrations and all that) being about four years old.

PS Think it was the number 2 or 5 to Hillsborough from outside Shiregreen club.

Being brought up in Ecclesfield, when I was 7 I had to pick a football team, or I'd be kicked out of the boys club and I'd have to hang around with the girls. So I picked Wednesday, and never regretted it, even with two relegations.

Despite this there has been bright moments. Trying to find a pub and finding one just in time for that fantastic play off final, with Peterborough fans backing Wednesday just cos I was 11 and cute. I couldn't watch that penalty.

Also going to a friends house to watch the first of that derby double and then seeing nothing much was going on so I nipped to the loo, only for the goal to go in.

Lived in Bellhouse Rd., till 1977 when I left for Mexico. You're right about the no.4. Seemed to ring a bell. So what was the bus that ran along Hatfield House Lane and down to Hillsbrough?
