Unfortunately I was not born in Catalunya brought up on a fottballing diet of Barcelona. However, even better for me, I was born in Sheffield. A funny twist of fate that karmic destiny should birth me in the town built on seven hills just like Rome. Neither was I left to fend for myself brought up by a pack of wolves liek Romulus the founder of Rome. I simply spent my early years in Sheffield, father, Grandfather blue and whites. I think common sense is a string trait in my family genes.
Shib, get a spurle chuckler for your browser, what on earth is fott-ball? Perhaps it's the game Wednesday play when we lose.
Romulus had a twin, Remus, and apparently they were as alike as two peas in a pod.
I think a stiring trait is much better than a string vest.
Me? Dad was an owl and I presume his dad too. I think Mum's side were involved with the other team though. Grandma and Granddad on that side lived within smelling distance of the sty.
My Dad grew up on Far View Road near Sheffield Lane Top and tells me how he used to spend Saturday's walking to Hillsborough. He took me to my first game in the late 70's, some lowly affair against Chesterfield or Rotherham I think, however since those days, there has only ever been one team and ground for me.
There have been the obvious high's of the cup runs etc, but the strongest memories I have are as a young man standing on the Kop watching the likes of Dalian Atkinson and Hirst rampage through opponents and the wonderful football played under Big Ron and to a degree Trevor Francis' era. I would add though that the atmosphere when the big screen was put on at Hillsborough for the Derby fixture at Bramall was special albeit a different experience.
One of the low memories that stick out for me being a home defeat to Rushden and Diamonds in the League a few years back... bleurgh..!
My parents and I moved away from Sheffield in 1980, but it didnt stop us from coming back for more match day thrills..!
My Nan is still hanging on in inShiregreen and there is still something special about driving up past her house with my scarf hanging out the car window and seeing fellow Owls stood at the bus stops waiting to join us at Hillsborough.
Me, well I im born n bred in Chezzie, at an early age I didnt really get into Football till I was about 8 or 9 and started to like Man U a bit but I never heard of Wednesday till we beat the Salford lot at Wemberly though I didnt see the game, then the first game of the 91-92 season v Villa just happened to be on Match of the day as a fetured match and something happened that couldnt explain, it was like love at first site, I couldnt explain it but even though we lost the game I said to my Dad, "do you know who I support?" to which my dad replied "Well you like Man U dont you?" To which then said proudly "Nope, it's Sheffield Wednesday, and that David Hirst is my favorite player"!!! And he is my all time best player. No matter what state we are in Rich or Poor, Premiership or Confrence, I love Sheefield Wednesday and always will.

Bladdy hell, Sheffield Wednesday I meant

I share that same memory...stood at the bus shelter in front of Concord Park waiting for the no.5 bus. Great times
Born and bred in Hillsborough, literally the other side of the park on Willis Rd where the little leccy shop called 'OATES' was at the bottom.in the wonderous year 1980!
First game was a blurr memory as my old man walked me down the road through hillsborough park. after a few years of a view from the north stand I saved up alll my moneys and bought my first season ticket in 93' the season we changed to seating instead of standing.. My bum was the first in the freshly moulded seats row YY at the back center of the KOP
If I remember rightly our first game that season was away at Liverpool and we unluckily lost 1-0
If first games are anything to go by, then I don't know how I ever ended up being a Wednesdayite!
April Fools day, 1995, Nottingham Forest at home. Yes, that's the one. Lost 7-1
Uncle took me to the game and for some strange reason I wanted to go again! Went to a lot of the games over the next few seasons with him and my Dad and when I hit my teens in 2003 I had a season ticket for 5 seasons with a mate.
Never much to cheer about though (apart from Cardiff 2005). Mate buggered off to Australia so I started playing Saturdays again and haven't been much over the last 2 seasons.

.....or was it no.4?

Thanks for that Stateside. Interesting site
It is, man we had some good stats when we were a little bit of a powerhouse...it's been so long you forget
Trueblue, didn't the number 4 go from Firth Park, thru Shiregreen, down Newman Road and into town. Anyway, from what era were you in Shiregreen ? I was there from birth to '73. Still have a few Aunts and cousins knocking about there. 'Tis a small world.
Anyway back to the thread. I was born in Sheffield, on a Wednesday, at 31 Clematis Road, S5 and I have blue and white eyes. First game was Newcastle '67 (been through this before on the old 606) and was more interested in the balloons they let off (Centenary celebrations and all that) being about four years old.
PS Think it was the number 2 or 5 to Hillsborough from outside Shiregreen club.
Being brought up in Ecclesfield, when I was 7 I had to pick a football team, or I'd be kicked out of the boys club and I'd have to hang around with the girls. So I picked Wednesday, and never regretted it, even with two relegations.
Despite this there has been bright moments. Trying to find a pub and finding one just in time for that fantastic play off final, with Peterborough fans backing Wednesday just cos I was 11 and cute. I couldn't watch that penalty.
Also going to a friends house to watch the first of that derby double and then seeing nothing much was going on so I nipped to the loo, only for the goal to go in.
Lived in Bellhouse Rd., till 1977 when I left for Mexico. You're right about the no.4. Seemed to ring a bell. So what was the bus that ran along Hatfield House Lane and down to Hillsbrough?
Eh up True, do you remember the videmat machines where you used to rub an 'apenny on yer chips, put 'em in and swear blind to the driver or inspector that it was 2p you'd put in.
