Potential New Ground

what do you think of this?

i know we've had a few stories like this over the years so why should this be any different?

If it does come to fruition would you be for or against the move?

Overseas owners is a red herring it's about the club. You would hope that Everton would be helped by the council as well.

===

Planning permission, help for euro funding etc then yes. Direct cash from local budgets....NO!

Much like the Stanley Park help the last owners were given

But a no point is £200m mentioned by the club

FFS, why does everything have to degenerate into spite?

It’s in the Council’s interests to help both Liverpool and Everton, whether in the form of grants or CPO’s, or any other method, because they are two successful, global businesses operating in an extremely de-commercialised area of the city.

Without the football clubs, where are the businesses that would sustain that part of north Liverpool? It grew up as part of the hinterland for the docks, which can no longer sustain it.

Does anybody seriously believe that if LFC re-located away from that area, it would spring back into life as a vibrant, commercialised area? Why hasn’t it happened in Kirkdale, where the football clubs have no footprint whatsoever?

I don’t believe for one minute that the degeneration of the area was entirely engineered by Liverpool, but nor do I blame the residents for making the case that it did...it’s their bargaining chip. Nor do I doubt that LFC’s actions sustained or accelerated it....it clearly would have that effect, if sustained over a long period of time, as it was.

There are always growing-pains for projects like this (as there are, for example, for big rail projects), and I sympathise with the residents...I don’t doubt their case, which has been played out for longer than expected because of the ownership problems at the club.

They should be generously compensated, and they are bound to lobby for that, as residents always do in such cases. I don’t believe for one minute that the degeneration of the area was entirely engineered by Liverpool, but nor do I blame the residents for making the case that it did...it’s their bargaining chip.

What irritates me about the likes of David Conn with his Dave Spart slant on it all is that he concludes the article by saying that we have now reached the point where the residents are being given above-market value for their properties, in addition to interest-free loans.
So where was David Conn when they weren’t?

North Liverpool needs both clubs. In the US, it is common for local authorities to spend money attracting sports franchises to their area, and they will go so far as to build an enitirely new stadium for them. It’s not because they are Santa Claus, it’s because it makes commercial sense.

But in this country we seem incapable of arriving at common-sense solutions to anything without getting all @rsey with each other and descending into spite.

Lets just see where the spite starts shall we FFS

Nobody mentioned getting a free ride or wanting the council to pay for any stadium......until Lucas

I have no problem with council help IF it is community projects/services that are attached to a new ground. But would I want them funding/building and leasing Everton a ground. NO!

I didn't point the finger at anybody in particular, Arouna, but clearly it's important to you. What's important to north Liverpool is something else other than finger-pointing.

Why not? Clearly if the Council did that, they would want strings attached which benefitted the local area.

Look at what the funding of the Commonwealth Games has ended up doing for the area around the Etihad. It's attracted further investment, which in turn has ploughed more money into the area.

In my opinion, there is nothing wring with Councils working with businesses to get the ball rolling. It's an investment.

Wessie, I just took his £200m comment/council building Everton a stadium as a sly dig. In none of the reports does the club mention this.

As I said in my earlier post, I have no problem with community leasure facilites and other community projects being attached to the club/ground. Thats what Everton in the community have been doing for years. If council money will help the club do more for the local community then I would like council involvement.

The council building a ground....not for me!

Fair enough, but I couldn't see why it needed to be pointed out in reply to my post. I don't care about that stuff...

Not that I'm suggesting that's what's on the table anyway, so I guess it's hypothetical, but I really don't get that....

Premiership clubs are global businesses, now....why wouldn't a local government want to encourage that?
They nearly lost Everton to Kirkby......whether or not that would have benefitted the club (I don't think it would have, personally).....it definitely wouldn't have benefitted the city.

Wessie...

You mentioned spite, not me. Others pointed out that the council had helped Liverpool. I dont mind community projects attached to any ground/complex being funded/part funded by local government. But I dont expect tax payers money to help a football club earn more money, fill the pockets of already rich owners

arouna - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/everton/10796705/Everton-want-to-follow-Manchester-City-model-in-hunt-for-new-50000-seat-stadium-in-Liverpool.html

rather than take offense so easily, maybe do a little research!?

"City’s Etihad Stadium was initially built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and remains the property of Manchester City Council.
Everton say a similar tenancy agreement is a necessity because they cannot afford to finance the construction of their own arena."

"The creates a dilemma for a club badly that is desperate for a stadium upgrade but cannot afford to mortgage its future by borrowing the necessary cash – a minimum of £200 million – to build it"

So elstone says they want to follow the city path with the club leasing a stadium off the council.

Tell me what I have said that is inaccurate??
