Rui Faria Ban

Assistant Manager Rui Faria's recent altercation on the touchline at Chelsea's home game to Sunderland has seen him given a 6 match stadium ban. He also received a £30,000 fine.

Yes, he was completely out of order.
Yes, he deserves a punishment for his actions.

However, although he had to be held back he did not actually (as far as I am aware) commit any violent act towards the referee and his assistants, or any of Sunderland's playing or coaching staff.

In March Newcastle manager Alan Pardew headbutted Hull FC player David Meyler. He was fined £60,000, and given a 7 match ban. However, only the first 3 games of this ban constituted a ban from the stadium.

I am not condoning Rui Faria's behaviour and he should accept any punishment given to him, yet I can't help but feel there is little difference between his and Pardew's sanction. This surprises me as Pardew's headbutt surely constitutes a much more extreme act than Faria's loss of control. I am especially surprised that Faria has a six game stadium ban, whereas only 3 of Pardew's match bans were from the stadium.

How do the FA decide on the punishments for these incidents? Are the FA discriminating against non-English coaching staff?

I wonder if this seeming excessiveness is because they are not confident of nailing Jose for his post match comments.

Generally football fans have a low expectation of the FA and all its workings. Yet the FA's well known incompetence is not an excuse for accepting potential discrimination...

seems excessive

all I saw was a bunch of shouting and a tantrum (unless I missed some event of violence)

It does seem a bit harsh and the fine I would say is a bit unreasonable.
Mourinho was only fined £8000 for the Villa incident, which is nothing to him. But I'm willing to bet Faria isn't anywhere near as well paid as Mourinho and a fine nearly four times as large seems a bit much.

doesn't the club just pay the fine on his behalf?

In all liklihood yes, but I imagine he will still need to pay it back.
