Carrick

Ok this is not a Carrick bashing article more like something i've noticed and it irritates me that i've seen over the last year or so.

Often i see people post Utd starting 11 on here with new signings and often people have this view that we "only need a partner for Carrick"

Not for me, we actually need to phase him out. He is very slow and does in fact slow our game down very often. OK his passing can be great but not if we are up against top quick midfield players that press him.

For me i hope LVG makes him a backup player from next season onwards, as he will be 33 and lets me honest we need some energy in our midfield, not a headless chicken but someone who is mobile such as Modric (who i know we won't get) but Kroos is possible.

Anyone else share the view that Carrick's best days are gone ? he has been quite frankly shocking for majority of the season as have most but compared to last season he has been utter tripe.

But he isn't going to improve he will decline more and more.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You could say the same about Rooney.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
no you couldnt
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is Rooney going to get better as he gets older?

Benched both players are obviously at different stages of their careers age and form wise.

Carrick is a player I have always enjoyed watching. A player who plays the game with an ease that few manage

Last season he was a joy to watch for me personally but of course, this season his standards have not been the same

Partly due to his own form of course but alot is down to the utter garbage around him too

He isn't a Keane or Scholes. Never has been. He isn't the sort of player who will take the game by the scruff of the neck. Basically put, if the players around him are playing poor, he will look poor too. Carrick needs an outlet. If there isn't one forward, he won;t just hoof it, he'll play it safe.

If there is an outlet, his accuracy, if you watch closely, is jaw dropping at times, Pace, direction. Good with both feet too.

He's a shadow marker. He looks where dangers may occur and cuts out supply lines. He trusts other players to do their jobs. He won't chase a player with the ball that is heading in a direction where we have plenty of cover. He'll turn and look for where the next danger might come and he'll cut out that danger before it arises.. His intercept stats are no fluke.

We have played him far too deep for me. He's been the best passer at the club since a Scholes pomp and we haven't utilised that in the way we should have sadly.

Carrick could easily play a part in a 3 man midfield for us still but in a 2, his best days are now probably behind him.

He's been a great player for us though, make no mistake, and he's been the one constant in an ever changing midfield for ages now and we have won plenty with him in there too.

Deserved his player of the season last season for me but if we are looking to have world class players in all positions like we used to have, then Carrick isn't one of the midfielder we need. Certainly not as a first choice anyway.

If the plan is a more dynamic approach, Carrick's laid back style will simply not suit.

He's been an unsung hero for United

I think he has always been slow, and his passing is overrated at times.

Don't care where Carrick plays, he is a CM and should be able to create chances from there.
-------------------
To get plenty of assists, you have to play in a position to get some

Remember when Fergie joked about Carrick being fined for being too far forward after scoring a goal once?

Best comments I have seen regarding Carrick for some time and I totally agree. If anything his passing is underrated. I love the way he pings it into the feet of forwards at times. Not his fault if they can't control it.
have seen Silva to likewise lately but not many British players seem to be coached to do this.

..............

This in my opinion is his biggest fault and why he isn't a DM.

And why he should never ever play alongside Fletch who also marks shadows but not as well.

I have said for ages now that we are playing Carrick in the wrong position.

He is not, never was, and never will be a DM. We have wasted the talent he does have, playing him there. He should have always been played further forwards.
----

I've been saying this for ages. He would have been more influential further up the pitch.

Time for him to be replaced

Absolute huge fan of Michael Carrick. 06-09 he was brilliant, had one bad season but really up'd his game in the last 2 seasons for us.

However, this season his age is completely showing now, 33 at the end of the season. He's become completely incapable of threading balls forward, which he was brilliant at doing before.

Sad to see him go, but he needs replacing now.

I LvG is quite flexible formation wise, but if he does opt for a 433, then Carrick at the base of the 3 with clever, mobile and energetic players next to him will bring out the best in him. That way he can mark shadows but not leave us exposed when pressing as he'd have players next to him who can do the pressing. Also frees him up a bit when in possession of the ball.
