That would be an approach that could backfire, if the player wanted to leave and felt the club were being unrealistic.

It could also result in him leaving for a lot less in the not too distant future.

There's no right or wrong of course - it's a negotiation and both sides should be seeking to get the best deal for their club.

the only thing I would say is he is probable better of for his career staying at Southampton for another 2 seasons, then looking for the BIG BIG move to Madrid, Bayern or Barca type club. not settling for any prem club that comes in for him.

That depends if he wants to play abroad, and it's a pretty big assumption that one of those clubs will want him.

A move to United would be huge for him.

you are right that a move to utd would be really big, I just think he could be meant for bigger things than that and taking to money now will essentially lock him into united for the rest of his career.

if that's what you think, you are being quite blinkered. which is fine cos you support your club and want them to have the best players, as I do (with the obvious disadvantages associated with that).
