So we have signed the second coming of Wayne Bridge for 30m?

He's still 18 FFS. What are you actually basing that on?
And you can see already that his technique is already far superior to what Wayne Bridge's ever was.
I'm not denying that £27m+ is not a lot of money for a left back because it would be a lie.
But he does look a proper player.

Sorry but that's a bit harsh on Shaw. The lad has never had a bad game that I've seen.
Every time I see him I think perhaps he may struggle today but he never does. Always has a good game and always up and down left side all game none stop.
Absolutely perfect for us. Money is irrelevant to me as we waste money on shiiiite players like Fellaini. So Shaw for same price is a great deal.
TRC, shouldn't that be "the reputed stipend is non compos mentis"?
Don't let your standards slip!
We are talking about one of the best LBs in PL. He is only 18 year old and already made it to PL team of the year. do people expect him to be sold for 10/12m? some posters need a seriously needs a reality check.
haha, RR. I bow to your superior diction.
or rather, i genuflect to your superior grandiloquence?
I'm not overly happy about this.
We used to be a club that would go out and find potential stars - not buy people at the top of their value.
Yeh sure, there were some examples of that not being true, but only in exceptional circumstances.
Now it seems that we will go and buy players for the most money they'll ever be worth.
I'm not saying it's wrong, but it does make me a bit uncomfortable.
I'm not too worried about the fee if he turns out to be the right player for us over a long period.
I suspect the bean counters at OT are pretty good at calculating the return on investment they can expect in such deals and wouldn't sanction them unless they promised to be profitable. They will have factored in increasing revenues, which account for increasing costs at the top of the market. (Our instinctive notion that £X is too much for a player probably sounds to them very much as our grandparents' horror at the cost of a pint of milk compared to the old days sounds to us.) They have probably even shown photos of Luke Shaw to focus groups made up of Japanese girls and measured the magnitude of their swoons. If we pay that much, he's probably worth that much in a hard-nosed business sense.
You guys need to read up about Wayne Bridge, very similar stuff was said about the fellow, look what happened.
For 27m we could sign Alaba from Bayern. A lot of people think Shaw will become the next Bale, won't happen. If we are going to spend that kind of money, it should be on proven quality not a kid who could very well flop.
Time will tell but I have seen nothing from him to get me excited

If I voice an opinion, it does not make we a wum.
Both made debuts at Southampton at 18, Bridge started as an attacking player but moved to defence, rated highly by all and sundry as the next big thing, Chelsea signed him, had a good few years then everything went downhill.
If we are going to spend that kind of money on a kid, it would have to be a young Ronaldo kind of player not an effin LB
" If we are going to spend that kind of money, it should be on proven quality not a kid who could very well flop."
I tend to agree with this.
It's a crazy amount of money for a relatively unproven full back.
£30m for the second coming of Ashley Cole.
Quality
"the second coming of Ashley Cole"
And if that were a guarantee, I'd agree with you.
But it's not.
It's a crazy amount of money for a relatively unproven full back.
--------------------------
How is he unproven?
2 PL seasons under his belt. That is 2 more than the flashy forgeign names that get bandied about by the usual suspects on here.
It's a big chunk of money, sure, but he is already passed the stage of potential, imo.... Much like Rooney was as good as a safe bet, even though he was so young.
