"After last summers fiasco it would be great to get one deal done and dusted already"
Now that I agree with!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lets put it this way, I'd rather spend £30m on Shaw than spúnk the equivalent on another Fellaini.
We have money, and I highly doubt we have any kind of fixed transfer kitty. It'll be a case of 'we can buy pretty much however much we want'
We make a fúck ton of profit so I can't see why we'd have a fixed transfer kitty. Not to mention, even if it were a fixed £100m, we have at least 5 or 6 players we're selling for various amounts...Assume £10m each, adds another 50% to the budget.
We are NOT financially restricted and buying Shaw would not impact other transfers in the slightest.
I have a question, if you could have one left back for free this summer for United, who would you pick?

Lahm, as he excels in a number of much needed positions.
Shaw wouldn't be far behind though..

Not true about Rio Dunc, Rio was already an accomplished footballer and with Rooney you could see it.
-------
you can see shaw is an accomplished footballer though as he is at the minute.
your concern is whether he can sustain that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not seen anything to make me believe he is good enough at our level. He needs to do that first, then sustain it.
If we have a kitty of about 100m, spending a third on a LB is madness
----------------------------------------------------------------------
he's just been voted the best LB in the country based on last season, how is that not enough??
I'd far prefer us to be in for Coentrao who is essentially the same, just £15m cheaper, but it's not my money, so I don't particularly care if it costs us £30m for Shaw, we wont exactly suffer for it.
We are NOT financially restricted and buying Shaw would not impact other transfers in the slightest.
========
How do you know this?
people keep saying
we'll not sign players like Kroos, Fabregas, vidal etc.
then in the same breath are saying we shouldnt buy shaw, we should go for Coentrao or Alaba
the fact is we need a LB, Shaw has been bang on for the last 2 seasons when he's played and he wants the move.

It has been repeated often enough by our club. For example, when we bought Mata, there was a club statement that read 'when players like Mata come along, you buy them, this will not impact our ability to buy our other targets'
More than can be said for your suggestion we only have £100m, which was essentially made up by the tabloids.
You only have to look at our profits over the last few years to know we're hardly suffering a money drought.

-----------------------------------
It is bizarre.
Season after season we hear that we should be more agressive in the transfer market and need to be competiting for the best talent.
We look set to get the best LB of last season, who looks to have an amazing career in front of him, and people cry over a few million.
I really do think it is partly down to him being English.
When we got linked with Mangala, no one was kicking up much stink about his price tag. Even Carvalho, who represents a huge risk for the price, was met with only a few mutterings about price.
exactly, i think people use the whole "he only costs so much because he's english" too much.
how about he costs thaty much because he is a very good LB who could give us 15 years of service.
Even if he does cost a premium for being English, it is something I hope our club keeps on doing.
I firmly believe having a British spine has helped our success over the past 2 decades and want it to carry on. Of course, they need to be highly skilled too, but if a highly skilled brit comes on the market... I hope we are in for him.
"people cry over a few million"
I think that's a bit harsh.
Some people just think we're paying over the odds, that's all.

I think that it is a valid point. You do have a pay a premium for English players. However, it is usually worth it, as they are less likely than foreign players to want to move after a few years.

I just meant that people aren't really that vehement in their protests, it just seems that some people feel we're over paying, that's all.
Rest assured, I can come to terms with the crying comment

That's fair enough, we likely are overpaying, but it doesn't really matter much.

I agree - I won't be throwing a tantrum if we sign one of the most highly rated youngsters in the English game!
I can understand people thinking we are being overcharged.... I just personally don't really care about it for a few reasons.
1) It's not my money
2) Whatever money that does come from my pocket into UTD's account, i'd rather see it go on players than anything else.
3) We might overpay, but we will be getting a player that will greatly improve our squad, in a position that is 2nd only to the CM in importance of getting sorted, imo.

Ji Sung Park's Cousin (U2958)
I can understand that.
I guess the big thing is whether it affects other deals. As much as we may have been told that it won't, I'm sure this is a cap on what we can spend.
Jay, I like your Mata example. Mata, proven quality, money available.
Shaw, not proven, why spend that kind of money??
If we only got Shaw and one top class CM like Kroos, as reported, I would be happy with that. Very happy. We must have £70m to spend.
We'd need to hope for a CB from the ranks (M.Keane) and an improvement from Carrick, Clevs and/or Fellaini... But those two players would go a long way to improving the 1st eleven.
You guys always make it seem like I do not want us to spend money. I do but I want it spent on the right player.
Even if we have money to spend, it does not mean we should throw it around willy nilly.
I am not opposed to signing Shaw, I am opposed to spending the kind of money being talked about.

We took a similar risk with De Gea.
Plenty of cheaper and more experienced goalies about at the time, but the guy was looking immense, for his age, and ticked all the right boxes for our club and our needs and now looks set to be one of the best keepers in the league for many years to come.
