You can actually choose which parts to believe in. For example you can choose to take parts literally or metaphorically. And the slavery part is the roman version of slavery and those slaves were actually quite well off and better than some freed men
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Doesnt explain the Homophobia.
People cherry picking which parts are true and which are not is baffling to me, who decides which parts are literal and which are metaphorical?

So I shouldnt mock slavery or homophobia that is contained in the bible, incase it offends someone's belief.
I suspect a fair number of gay people have had their lives ruined because of being judged by the teachings of the bible.
Imo you cannot cherry pick those parts of religious books that suit you. You either believe the books to be true or you dont.
You use scientists as an example, ever heard of Galileo and how he was imprisoned for offending the church?
Turns out he was right.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Some things in the Bible are there as history and are not really encouraged, more of discouraged. E.g. slavery..
Also Galileo event had nothing to do with religious teachings. It was more of power hungry people hijacking religion to have control of everything. A bit like priest abusing kids (personal choice).

Just like every walk of life, there are issues and events in religion that may not entirely correlate with certain societies, e.g. attitude towards g.ays. However christianity highly discourages persecution of anyone regardless as it's not up to humans to judge. In fact religion is often a refuge in places where being g.ay is a death sentence or serious crime

I understand what you are saying, it is those parts of the bible that I critisize.
The fact that religion is part of our education system is a worry for me, who decides which parts to encourage and discourage?
If you hold a book up as a moral guideline, people (not all) will take the whole thing as literal.
This is one reason why it is not above critisism.
Some if the stories are outrageous, it is these that I mock.

Some stories may appear outrageous, but remember that the books were written thousands of years ago and the people who wrote may not actually know they were writing (that's assuming it was inspired by a divine being). E.g. rocks falling from sky with fire.. Missiles? I know the idea of flying humans would've been ridiculous at some point before aeroplanes..
On schools/education, it's never good to teach ignorance. No knowledge is bad knowledge and that includes religion. People are more likely to fall for bad side of religion if they know nothing and eventually come across religion (and find out that it may not be as bad as society may make it seem).
