As the transfer gossip reaches full swing, memories are cast back to some of the great swoops of the PL era. Eric Cantona was signed for a mere £1.2m for example, before the explosion of the market sent wages and price tags spiralling to astronomical levels.
As the value slapped on a player increases, the expectation is elevated exponentially, and sadly some have failed to justify the hype by flopping spectacularly on the stage.
Fernando Torres' fall from grace came to the tune of £50m (small change to Chelsea, but a valuation that caused the football world to sit up and observe his abilities, only to be disappointed).
In terms of money and and expectation, who has been the biggest flop in PL history?
To even the debate, let's have some of the success stories too.

it's all relatve actually because the biggest flops are the ones with the biggest repercussions. Torres has been a spectacuarly poor signing but tat the same time we haven't even dropped out of the top 4
worst signing would be someone like Afonso Alves, a signing which Boro could never really afford and which they;re still paying for

Moses helped Liverpool to finish above Chelsea, his parent club. Now thats how you work the loan market.

think my point still stands though that Torres hasn;t had such repercussions as, say, Afonso Alves
despite this dismal signing we're still competing right at the top level evry season

The biggest success for me was Gianfranco Zola (and i know a lot of people will disagree with this) the best player the PL has seen.
As for the biggest flop it could quite easily be any of Torres (Chelsea), Shevchenko, Taibi or Veron and my vote will go for Veron.
