How is Mata in the wrong league when he was thriving in the league in a team that wasn't playing possession based football?

he was literally our only competent winger/AM in his first season and he did very well as the rest of the team struggled badly (cup runs aside). in the second season he was playing off of Hazard and Oscar and that was one of the most entertaining attacks i have ever seen tbh. So from that its obvious he either needs stands out amongst sh'te or play off of good players around him.

I hope this isn't true?! As much as i rate Vidal highly i also highly rate our Mata and would be saddened if we sold him. Whilst i agree that he hasn't been as great/effective as he was for Chelsea than us (especially this season) i'd be gutted if we let him go. For me Mata is the best technical number 10 player that we have in our side and once he gains his confidence back and plays with a much better midfield you will see him shine.

As for Vidal, can't we just buy him off Juve instead of a swap deal. They're getting more cheeky lately. They've already got our Paddy and i don't want them to have our Mata - but i'd like to take their Vidal off them

I love Mata and ideally do not want him to see him leave. But it just depends on how LVG sees the team evolving. If for example he wants to bring in Vidal and Strootman then someone has to give way for them and Mata is one of the likely candidates. Of course Vidal will need to prove his fitness from now until at least January (as will Strootman) but assuming they do and they play consistently for the next few months then it goes without saying that Van Gaal is going to be very interested in recruiting one or even both of them. I would imagine he sees this season as Fellaini, Anderson and Fletcher's last (maybe even Carrick's too). Apart from Fellaini they are all out of contract at the end of the current season so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he wants both of them.

Imagine this team in January or next season in a 3-4-1-2 formation:-

...............De Gea..............
.......Jones.......Blind.......Rojo...
..Herrera...Vidal...Strootman...Shaw..
...............Di Maria..............
.......Rooney.........Falcao......

One thing is for sure...Yaya Toure won't just run right through that midfield as if it isn't there. If the above is similar to what LVG has in mind then Mata (as much as i think he can be a superb player for United if utilised properly) will i'd imagine be the most likely to make way.
