50 years.....

.... a spurs supporter. I remember standing on the terraces as a 10 year old for the first time. I missed watching them win the double- I used to think well at least I will see them win the league in my life time. 50 years later not only have we not won the league we have not even come close -while I have seen teams like Derby , Everton, Forest, Villa etc. do it. That is just disgraceful for a team of Spurs' stature. Why Spurs have never challenged is due to their constant weak underbelly -they always manage to let you down against very average opposition. However, Saturdays performance was one of the worsy I have ever seen. No manager -no matter the quality of squad he has at his deposal should allow his team to perform like that ... a gutless bunch. I remember times when we were short of strikers and the likes of Mike England had to play at centre forward, but I cannot remember such a bunch of hapless forwards in one squad. Levy and Baldini have a lot to answer for

I am fecking fed up with rotation -resting players buls iite -its just a case of keeping a large squad of average players happy. We have just bought the captain of last years Europa cup winners -he wasn't playing. We have just a bought a very good ball winning midfielder who won the league in France with Montpelier -he was not playing... all of a sudden these players are not as good as the rubbish on show on Saturday.

Poch had a much smaller squad at Southampton. He needs to pick his best eleven and stick with them and make them tick and gel... or I can see things imploding and yet another manager will be on his way. I was hoping that Poch might achieve something, but I am already questioning his judgement. I have read these boards for some time and although there are always a few WUMs , most generally have a the same view about the players doing well at the dead wood etc. I just cannot understand why managers cannot see it -its the managers that do that get successful.....

I had to let my season ticket lapse a number of years ago. Starting a business which involved a great deal of travel, raising a family that took a lot more time and dosh than I ever imagined but I always thought life would settle down eventually and I could again start going to Spurs. I, like thousands of others joined the queue for a season ticket more than a few years back in the knowledge that they would be able to accommodate us in a lovely new stadium with a team built on solid foundations and showing real signs of becoming a force in football.
While I'll never stop being a Spurs fan I'm afraid the passion has been beaten out of me as every step forward is almost certainly followed by 2 steps backwards. Ok, sometimes its only 1 step backwards but you get the drift.
I don't care that other teams messed up this weekend as well, we could have moved into the top 4 and with it comes a surge of confidence and pride but no. We have 1 shot on target and a bunch of players who really looked like they wanted to be anywhere but playing against the 'unglamorous' baggies. No sleight intended baggies fans, I think your lot played with pride and professionalism while our lot looked what they are, an unhealthy mixture of overpaid dullards and narcissistic mercenaries. MoPo needs to share in the blame. His starting line-up was not the strongest. FFS choose the strongest team possible for every game and force other players into breaking into the first 11 via late substitutions.

Bentaleb - The Algerian Zidane

I never quite understand why fans have to tell our fans how long they have been supporting a club.

Why not, if a supporter wants to tell us all of all the good times he has seen, why try to put him or her down. Football is all about history, like it or not, yesterday has already passed into history. Any Spurs fans worth his sorts, should be pleased to hear about exploits from Spurs back in the day, and how long a supporter has followed his team should be commended, not belittled.

After the dross that has been served up the past 20 years or so, give or take a year or two, then I can well understand the modern supporters being very tetchy against older supporters who have been there, seen it, done it as they say. It`s called happy memories.

Excellent article OP by the way.

Just for the record I predate you by a few years, so was lucky to see the double side in all it`s pomp.

--------

But he never had Europa to juggle with when he was at Southampton. Cut him some slack, he's involved in Europe for the first time, and it's not just the usual Europey campaign that you can put to one side. For once it's worth being in.

Poch needs time, and isn't helped by having an overrated squad of players to work with.
