There's Life In The Old Dog Yet

I just wanted to share this rather interesting stat regarding our team captain. I'll admit it was a bit of a surprise to me as I'm sure it will be to may of the posters who have been calling for him to be dropped recently. Anyhow, you can't argue with the company he is keeping here, especially as it proves that he was particularly successful at the very thing that many have been criticizing him for in the past couple of weeks.

Successful Passes In Final Third (2010/11 Season)
1. Nasri - 601
2. Maluda - 593
3. Fabregas - 548
4. Silva - 530
5. Modric - 528
6. Wilshire - 527
7. Arteta - 499
8. K. Davies - 499
9. Murphy - 483
10. Adam - 465

And with that attitude we'd still be in the dark ages, change needs to be embraced in order for progress to be made

Thats true but it works, we can tweak the team but lets not just drop one of the most important parts of our team just for progress sake...

But this is what I'm saying, I think his importance is waning and now is the time to try out different things now that we no longer rely on him as much (we still do rely on him to an extent and he still has a role to play) I just think that Davies strengths are slowing the footballing revolution of Coyle and other players should be given a try

'If it isn't broken, don't fix it IMO.'

I reckon that's something Megson might say, just saying like. God forbid someone try something different!

While there's games where he plays well, including those so far this season, there's teams where defenders completely nullify him. Stoke for example, where they can easily cope with his aeriel threat. Would it not therefore be a good idea to attempt a different approach? Just because it's not broke, doesn't mean it can't be improved.

If we drop him, we will lose these and replace it with an unknown quantity expecting other players to take up the slack in regards to assists and expect the goals to come from, at the moment a player who has blown hot and cold in the premier league in the past...
---------------------------------------------------

Kevin Davies blows hot and cold as well! He's useless against Stome and struggles against Fulham. Coyle is looking to change how the team play, and at one point we will need to stop playing David's for good. Might as well let him play a reduced role while we still have the option of bright him on.

IMO, Davies is holding back our progression from hoofers to a more easy on the eye football style.

If you've looked above, I said we should 'tweak' things not make wholesale changes.

IMO we shouldn't consider dropping Davies until Tuncay has bedded in and Holdens back because ATM we don't have the ability in midfield to compensate for dropping Davies...

Said it many times but it always falls on deaf ears....we will never truly change our style of play while SKD is on the park. The temptation to just hoof it to Kev is always there. Jussi being one of the prime hoofers. Watch any other goalie roll the ball out to a full back or midfielder...not us though.....Punt it .....give possesion back. I can't fathom why this is still an on-going problem...but I'll willing to accept that I know nowt.

No, the difference is evolution not revolution. He changed too much, too quickly. Not exactly the same as, god forbid, changing one 34 year old striker now and again.

I will chip in here. For my money SKD is past his best. The stat's impressive but as has already been pointed out most of our play in the second half of last season went through him I'd expect his number to be pretty high.

It does not alter the fact that in my opinion we need someone younger and quicker up front and that with Owen's style of play involving much more ground play that utilises the midfield Kevin's now more of a plan B than our ONLY option.

With our midfield now gradulaay coming back together (I know we won't have Chung all season and that's a huge blow but Mavies is back and Holden's not far away) we won't be anywhere near as dependent on a long high ball to SKD to flick down.

Not only that but I think even the most die hard Kev fans will admit the vast majority of teams are wise to that tactic anyway,.all they do is man mark Kev and as soon as he jumps the ref gives a free kick against him because the defender's rolling around like he's been sniped by the taliban.

Kev has had a greatstart to the season no question. But IMO he should not be an automatic first choice now. with tuncay on board and Klasnic also looking sharp it's time to change things about a bit. Keep Kev fresh for when we really need him. I think if we get N'gog or someone like that then it will be time to look at putting kev on the bench as an impact sub. And to those who think I'm knee jerking I'm not. I've been suggesting this for nearly eighteen months now. Kev WILL tire towards the end of the season. His form WILL drop if we play him every single game as we did last term. anybody's would but when the player in question is 33 and already not quite as sharp as he was then the effect is magnified.

Moses I don't advocate throwing babies out with bathwater. If Kev is playing well and his form justifies him starting then do it by all means. But I think Sergeant_Nige is right. It's time to look at other options NOW before Kev loses his utility entirely. For one thing I'd love to see himtake a young striker under his wing and sheperd him on. He's a towering figure at this club and rightly so which in my opinion makes him perfect as a future striking coach and maybe one day trotter's boss but for now he could be very valuable in leading by example while passing on his knowledge to the likes of young Tom Eaves.

As to the captain's armband, well, Nigel Reo Coker wouldn't exactly disgrace it on Kev's day off would he?
