Where does Carrick fit in this side now?

I thought (along with a lot of other people) that Carrick was excellent yesterday and brought a bit more tempo to our play with his passing. Obviously the rest of the team weren't on their game as was reflected in the huge effort just to win 1-0 but with Carrick back we have a good player to come back into the side.

We have 4 CM's in Carrick, Herrera, Blind and Fellaini. Obviously with Di Maria, Rooney, RVP, Mata and Falcao to fit in only 2 of those CM's will play at any time (unless one is playing as an emergency defender).

Assuming that we have fit defenders (i know!) which two CM's should be first choice?

For me it should be Carrick and Herrera as I feel Carrick does the DM job well but with better passing than Blind. But i'd love to see what two players people on here would prefer to start.

It seems whenever Di Maria doesn't play well we don't. We don't have any one else who's prepared to take risks and beat people. Everyone just played the safe option yesterday.

" brought a bit more tempo to our play with his passing"

Do you mean that slow, boring, in creative play we made yesterday?

Carrick doesn't have the legs to play in the big games for me, and there is little point in playing him midfield when we have 70% possession (which is good to see), in the games like yesterday we should play him cb. Allow him to keep the ball ticking over from defence because as I said there was enough passes attempting to cut their defence open yesterday.

Truth is we were lucky to win, other than the goal we didn't havr many clear cut chances, maybe one or two. Which as I said Isnt enough when you have as much possession as we did. Too many water carriers yesterday.

It is like the type of football Robb likes is the slow as f, lumpy obvious football. First Fellaini then Carrick. Only yesterday, the change pushing Carrick back and Blind forward made an obvious difference in the attacking.

I am not sure you actually watch football to enjoy it.

Carrick was the only one passing the ball fast, forward and with speed. Obviously you don't rate Carrick but it's hardly his fault you're blind to the excellent forward passing he brings to the side.

Maybe just once you wanna blame the real culprits for yesterdays lack of incision (Di Maria, RVP and Adnan).

They had plenty of the ball but did nothing with it.

Passing the ball to feet and passing the ball to a player in space are two different things. Sideways passing, 5 yard passes to a player backing the opposition is not what we are looking for but thats what we got loads of from Carrick. At least Blind pushes up a bit to help the link up and take the space offered by the defence, Carrick just sits back and leaves a gaping hole in central midfield.

But Ignore simple dynamics of football and blame wingers for having to beat 2 -3 men because carrick "passed it to feet" when they should be passed into space. I reiterate I do not know what type of football you like, but it is not attacking football.

You do realise that there was no space yesterday as Palace put 11 men behind the ball? At OT there is very rarely any space when these teams come and play the most negative football possible. Hence why when Mata came on we had to score with a shot outside the box.

Carrick is the perfect player to play in these types of home games because he recycles the ball from the back quickly and gets it forward well. He protects the back 4 from counter attacks and links up play well. He was our man of the match yesterday as stated by people who watched the game.

Blind is better for covering against 11 men. He's quicker and gets into tackles, ergo, better at brining counter attacks to a dead halt. Carrick is better at covering the space (rather than taking the ball), so I think he'd be better suited for matches where possession is less in our favour.

Also, Shaw was quiet easily the MOTM yesterday, just sayin;'

Carrick wasn't motm, Shaw was. And when Blind was switched with Carrick United looked a lot better. Blind actually closes people down which is a pretty basic requirement of a player who's job it is to protect the back four. Think Blind is also better in tight situations, Carrick can be got at. At 33 I don't think Carrick should be a guaranteed starter anymore. And if he is to play then I'd like to see one of Herrera or Blind with him, maybe even both in the tougher games.

You don't need recycling of the ball in these games, that comes naturally with 70% possession of the ball, most midfielders can sit there with 6/7 seconds on the ball to pick you pass.

My problem with Carrick is that he never tries to split the defence with a pass, which is what the best midfielders can do.

Carrick was very good against Palace, but what I liked was having him AND Daley Blind on the pitch together, talk about options! I think it'll be a rotation basis to keep them both fresh, Blind will only improve, but we should avoid over-using Carrick due to age, and HAVING to depend on him each week. Keep in mind we'll be playing more matches next season, God willing. Glad to see him come back looking fresh!!!
