the competition.
1970, Wembley, Chelsea fc, 2, > Leeds Utd fc. 2.
Chelseafc , Bonetti, Webb, Mc Creadie, Hollins, Dempsey, Harris, Baldwin, Houseman, Osgood, Hutchinson, Cook, sub, Hinton.
Leeds Utd fc, Spreak, Madeley, Cooper, Bremner, Charlton, Hunter, Lorimer, Clark, Jones, Giles, Grey, sub, Bates.
This Match is a must view for all true football fans, it totally sums up the game in this era, both sides were giants, Chelsea had swagger and style , Leeds were the first and true mean machine, it ended in dead lock at 2 / 2.
Cfc went on to win the replay at Old Trafford.
Sorry i haven't put the link, if someone could be so kind and add i would be grateful.
At the time i was 9 years old, lived locally and was a generally taken to watch Fulham & Qpr, this game changed my life and began my journey of supporting CFC.
I wonder did this game ring any bells for some of our other long suffering supporters ?
Admin 1 , would you please multi board this with a Leeds tag, a little good will goes a long way, ( i for one will be well behaved )
Great memories !

Osgood went with England in 70, Ifarka. Arsenal finished mid table in 70 yet won the then very rare Double in 71. Shows how little difference there was between a lot of sides then. Can you imagine a mid table side from last season winning the Double this season?

Ok, Osgood,
Yes the double in those times was a significant achievement, that Afc side had a bit of the invincibles about them.
When Sexton moved to AFC FROM CFC a few key players moved as well,McClintock, Graham, Hollins if my recollection is correct !

Agreed were/ Leeds did have the claim as the best side in europe and were edging CFC in the League, but CFC went on to win the match over two legs and beat Real Madrid in the Super cup.
Incredible times.

David Elleray re reffed the game fairly recently and under current rules red carded 6 and yellow carded 20.

Yep, that's the thing I was talking about. 6 reds and 20 yellows, haha!

More than likely Nick, how do you rate the 1970 final ?
A bit before your time ?

Hard to argue that. Although I've seen my own side in a few great games down the years, it probably is the defining FA Cup final. Perhaps older generations would go for the Matthews Final in 53 though.
Some people underrate that Leeds team. Yes, they could be a 'dirty' side (Giles in particular) but they also played some of the best football this country has seen (Giles in particular again). They were happy to play it either way. The famous demolition job on Southampton testament to their ability.
English football's golden era. So much competition from the early 60s into the early 70s. Don't think anyone retained the title in that decade.
Just to add you were also a very stylish side back then, perhaps though with some of the talent you had you slightly underachieved?

Id say. more than a bit. But seen it on numerous occasions. boggy pitch, great atmosphere, with probably our best side till the late 90s.

Nick, the Major sums it up fairly accurately , English footballs golden era.
From our perspective this period contributed significantly to the Cfc's DNA and the modern club we know today, we did suffer a bit of a 20 year hangover though.

Right from Burnley to to Arsenal's double winners the league was wide open. The cup as well.
Arsenal's double winning season was peculiar. They don't win a league for going on 20 years, achieve a feat only done twice before then I think, then go into relative obscurity in the league again till Graham nearly 20 years on.
Cracking side though, evidently.
