Some would say no. Some would say the true aim is to play good football.
But I would argue that one leads to another.
The better your team plays, the more chances they will create.
[Depends on ones definition of "better"]
The more chances you create, the more goals you score.
[This is simple maths as long as chance conversion rate stays above 0%... even then own goals are possible]
The more goals you score, the more games you win.
[In general, again depends on one's defence]
The more games you win, the more chance you win a trophy.
Ergo, trophies are a consequence of playing "good" football where "good" constitutes creating a lot of genuine goal scoring opportunities.
It is possible to play good football AND win trophies but fans expect one of the two as a minimum.
Between 1996 and 2011 Wenger delivered this. And that was why I stood by him. Even in the trophyless years from 2006-2011 we were playing exquisite football and we reached finals in 2006/2007/2011.
But since 2011, since we lost Cesc and Nasri (to transfer) and Theo (to injury) we have NOT played good football.
We have been fairly awful for a few seasons now.
We have been saved by superhuman performances, firstly from Van Persie, and last season from Ramsey while the team has remained average.
The goalkeepers have not been good enough.
The defence is shockingly thin in numbers and quality (I can only trust/rate Gibbs and Koscielny and maybe Debuchy - Chamber is potentially good).
There has never been a solid DM. First we tried Song, since then we have used Arteta and Flamini. Song had no discipline, Flamini was past it and Mikel is a CM NOT a DM.
Wilshere has been blighted by injury after injury. He has barely progressed and we simply cannot trust him to go more than 3 months before breaking down again (same for Diaby although 3 months should read 3 games).
Ramsey is trying to piece his career together.
Cazorla was badly misused last season
Ozil is injured half the time.
Ox is only just starting to get regular starts.
Podolski is out in the wilderness.
Giroud has been solid as has Welbeck so far but neither is going to score more than 25 goals in a season.
Walcott is always out injured but when he plays he is outstanding.
There are soo many issues of the top of my head and I can't even be bothered to go into tactical errors.
Wenger has been a fantastic manager and I grew up thinking he was the best.... well, he isn't anymore and I've only just realised that we won't win the PL/CL until he leaves.
Furthermore, and more importantly to me, we won't play good football, because our best players will never play together because they are always in the injury room.
I'm sorry to say it (I truly am) but Wenger should be prepared to step down at the end of the season and the board should start looking for a successor now.
Are trophies really that necessary?

Winning is lovely.

Playing beautiful footie is important too,but then the team may not win things?

The FA pyramid has 92 clubs chasing about 4 league trophies and a smattering of elimination cups. Very poor odds off the bat already. As a fan, I guess we all have our reasons for supporting our sides.

For Arsenal or in general?
For us at this time it is more about being competitive, as long as we are not far off in the league and champions league it is acceptable. But at some stage you have to move onto the next level and start winning these tournaments.
For a team like Hull, I guess trophies don't come high on the priority list at the moment.
But it is cycles and all about improvement.
As long as you do better each year one day you will win something!

I guess we have all been spolit by some of the brilliant footie we use to play under Wenger and once you ever taste anything in life that is better than anything before it you tend to want more. Human nature I guess.
I remember supporting some real bad Arsenal teams in the past, sometimes I wonder how I did that, I guess it was my love for Arsenal FC. The thing is now I want the beautiful footie back again.

The definition of good football is subjective.......the definition of winning football is definitive....

So this is just a standard moan thread dressed up as something more.
We actually played some lovely stuff for the first half of last season. It wasn't just Ramsey carrying us as you suggest.

Excellent article. Considering our size and budget, we should at least be challenging for trophies, and challenging forcefully, right till the last minute of the last game. We lack a leader! We have some great players, a loose but okay system, but we have no tactical genius to make it all work. To put players where they want to be, and to fire them up, make them believe they will win things.
Wenger puts players in odd positions, and mumbles to them as they cross the line " play nicely boys, if you are very lucky you may even win! but I wont care either way, your wages are safe"
Probably!

Trophies are not necessary, but they are desirable.
