Yes he is the leading PL goalscorer but his goal ratio was on 50% which is the similar to Cole and Rooney but less then Henry who was 68%.
He played for 2 teams who really had no other options for goalscorers so he would bang in the majority of the goals for his teams.
Unlike Rooney, Henry, Cole etc who had other players who shared their goals.
Not taking anything away from Shearer he was a cracking goalscorer but is he just slightly over rated ???
Henry 258 Games 175 Goals - 68% Strike rate
Shearer 559 Games 283 Goals - 50% Strike rate
Rooney 386 Games 179 Goals - 46% Strike rate
Cole 509 Games 230 Goals - 45% Strike rate
Lampard 597 Games 175 Goals - 29% Strike rate
Was Shearer THAT good ?

Shearer is probably on that second rung of CF's from the 90's, early 00', behind the likes of Batistuta, Henry, Romario etc, but was still an awesome player

Comparing both their first 8 seasons in the PL Shearer actually has a better ratio than Henry.
Henry - 254 games - 174 goals
Shearer - 253 games - 176 goals

Henry was a better all round player than Shearer but at just sticking the ball in the net I think Shearer MIGHT just pip him, but Henry had so much more to his game than just the goals. He also looked super cool playing the game where as Shearer was boring

Shearer was that good. Did you see him play? Absolutely lethal striker

And the strike rate doesn't take into account the fact that Shearer hardly scored when he was undeniably past his best in the latter stages of his career. Henry left Arsenal whilst still pretty close to his peak

He was 'that good' as a striker
He was more consistent than anybody at 'striking' other players

He could finish from any position and he scored every type of goal from a scrappy goal to a tap-in to a long-range volley! It was a pleasure to see Shearer score all types of goals! Thanks Shearer for all the football memories!

Shearer played for the likes of Blackburn and Southampton who were always going to be competing for the title every season, thrashing teams week in week out, so of course he was going to get goals. Rooney has never really had that luxury in his career.

This. I can't believe anyone is even questioning how good Shearer was.
I've never really liked the guy but he is one of the best finishers I have ever seen. Miles better than Rooney or Cole in that regard and I don't care what the stats say.
This thread highlights the difference between actually watching football and being an amateur statistician. Shearer was an incredible striker and it really shouldn't be up for debate.
