why has the battle for 3rd/4th every season become, it seems, more important than actually winning the premiership? It`s all you seem to hear pundits, TV and Radio presenters waffle on about. Frankly the only place to finish in a league is 1st. The next big thing will be getting to the semi-final of the FA Cup is somehow seem better than actually winning the FA Cup. Words fail me really on how we are all getting sucked into this Top Four is the must have trophy.
Discuss.
Now I may be old fashioned, but

Sir Tottenham
Far too many teams throw in the towel before the seasons starts, because they are told they have no chance of winning the prem.

arsenal being in the champions league is just a joke really. no one in Europe takes them seriously.

Doesn't matter what other teams in Europe think of us, we're there and you lot have been trying so hard for years to be there too.

I'm enjoying getting a much better run at 4th than I expected. However I'm realistic enough to know we've had a lot of luck to amass the number of points we have and it will probably run out soon.
Those who say that we are aiming to win the league (1961 when we last won it) will quite rightly be the butt of jokes.

I expect Spurs to win the league every season.

What's with all this luck you reckon Spurs have had. The majority of games this season Spurs have dominated, and have got their just results whether they have scored in the first or last minute. I cannot think of many games Spurs have been lucky to win this season. 89th minute goals are all part of a 90 minute game, so you cannot call that lucky.

Sandy I have never known us win so many away games we've played badly in. Did you watch the performances at West Ham, Leicester, Villa, Swansea and QPR? Whereas its nice to get a bit of luck for a change we will need to play better in our last 10 games to claim 4th.

What has it done for you though....you qualify, to compete you get eliminated, you collected your extras millions, you buy better players, you get 4th place again, you compete, you get eliminated...etc
You qualify for the CL for 2 reasons.....to win it and the money. You look nowhere winning it and havent for years. The money has got you no closer to winning the league and the FA Cup as your only trophy in 10 years.
What has the CL done for you other than skew your priorities

Its always been about winning but even when I was a kid there was a 'top three' mind set in operation. Still is in most sports. The elite of the elite regardless of the CL nonsense.

There's a big difference between "expecting" to win the league and "aiming" for it. Only Chelsea and City can realistically expect it, but why shouldn't a team come from nowhere and win if? It's happened before. Who's to say all this talk of who can & can't win it affects teams mentality reinforcing the elite we see today? In the old days clubs started the season on a much more even footing.
I clearly remember hoddle saying before 2000-2001 season that we are aiming to win it. The interviewer questioned it and he basically said you may aswell give up the sport if you don't start out to win it!
