England

Now I know we aren't all concerned about the international team here, but one thing really bugged me last night. The commentators kept bringing up how close Rooney was to overtaking Lineker.

It's a ridiculous comparison. Rooney has played more than 100 England games (having played 22 more than Lineker) whilst Gary played 80. Not only this but Rooney started playing for England at a much younger age (17 when he was first capped, I believe. Lineker was 24). As well as this Lineker hold England's record for goals scored at a World Cup (10).

I think this is a prime example of where a single statistic doesn't show you the whole story, and some people here should probably think about that.

So what are your thoughts? Lineker or Rooney?

Rooney is a miles better player than lineker ever was

Greaves and Clarke were better than Rooney

Worth considering that Rooney often doesn't play as England's no. 9. His strike rate is pretty decent for someone often filling a support striker role.

Rooney will hold the record, but no one will think of him in the way they think of the others unless he actually performs at a tournament.

He's been terrible at every tournament since 2004, even getting himself suspended with a stupid sending off the qualifying game before.

I was hoping that he would have been dropped after Brazil.

He was probably our best player at the last World Cup, him or Cahill probably.

Not that there was much competition but I'd drop the average players who played worse than him first...

Think your bias is calling him our best player. No one played well at the last world cup, but Rooney was poor.

You look for your best players to stand up and lead, and Rooney hasn't done that in a tournament for England. He looks good in qualifying against poor teams, but when he comes up against better opposition he doesn't perform.

Agreed. If I was England manager, I'd leave Rooney out altogether. My starting 11 would be:

---------------Hart

Clyne--Cahill--Jones--Bertrand

-------------Carrick

--------Barkley--Delph

------------Sterling

--------Kane--Welbeck

Phil Jones is awful, surely Smalling or Jagielka are better?

Should have been sent off against Liverpool.

I'll admit, I picked Jones and Cahill based on how they did against Lithuania. I will concede that it was easy for them to look good as they had so little to do.

I think Phil Jones is a decent player, he'll grow into a good international footballer.

IMO he's the sort of player that will have a really good tournament whilst being derided by many fans and when they actually analyse what he's done in retrospect over that tournament they'll have him willingly the next time.

I sometimes wonder if even he knows what his best position is...?
